![]() To breath is to live and to live is to breath. Oxygen is carried through the blood stream to all parts of the body, including the nervous system. We can go several weeks without food, a couple of days without water, but only about three or four minutes without air. Breathing controls the oxygenation of our white blood cells to protect our bodies. Thus, the quality of our health really has a lot to do with the quality of the life of our cells. A fully oxygenated system would seem to be a number one priority and breathing correctly is the place to start. Meditation can be explained simply by our daily experiences of life. When we are absorbed in thought the process of breathing slows down. Meditation involves the slowing down or cessation of thought through concentration on a sound, word or an object. This brings with it a slowing down of the breathing process. The process, when done appropriately, enhances oxygen consumption and aids in normal functioning of the nervous system. People have been practicing meditation for thousands of years. There is evidence that it has been used by many religious prophets and philosophers down through the ages. During the 1960’s it grew in prominence through the introduction of Transcendental Meditation. Researchers studied its physiological effects on some of the spiritual practitioners of the time. They found that the practice of meditation can have beneficial effects on anyone whether done for spiritual or any other reason. Biofeedback monitoring indicates that meditation encourages the brain to produce an evenly balanced pattern of alpha and theta brain wave rhythms, indicating that the body is relaxed and the mind calm yet alert. It is helpful in lowering blood pressure; controlling anxiety; overcoming migraine headaches; etc. Just 20 minutes of meditation twice a day will help in the control of stress. It has been found to improve well-being and sensory awareness.
