A LULU OF A PUBLISHER
By Shirley Cheng

PR Writing and publishing is a process that is both challenging and rewarding for most people, especially for those who are blind and physically disabled, and this is the case with me. Having lost my eyesight at the age of seventeen, I no longer could express myself in my artwork, so I turned to writing to share with others my imagined worlds and creations. I became an author at the age of 20, completing three books within one year. I wrote my books using a screen reader, a computer software that reads what's on the screen and tells me which keys I type. It has great functionality that enables its users to use most computer programs with relative ease.

When I first started out as a professional writer, I was clueless to as what I should do to publish my books. I never heard about self-publishing or print-on-demand-technology, nor did I know that traditional publishing is not the route for everyone. I began by researching on the Internet and joining discussion e-mail groups consisted of writers, publishers, editors, and other professionals in the publishing world. I searched for publishers, and learned what to look for in a publisher.

For my first book, "Daring Quests of Mystics," I first published it with a small publisher who uses print-on-demand technology. It differs from many other print-on-demand publishers in that they review manuscripts in order to accept those of high quality before accepting them for publication. I was thrilled when "Daring Quests of Mystics" was accepted, and in a matter of a few months, my book was published.

For my following two books, "The Revelation of a Star's Endless Shine" and "Dance with Your Heart" (and later "Daring Quests of Mystics" when my contract with the publisher ended), I decided to self-publish them through Lulu.com. Although Lulu.com is listed as the publisher since I bought my ISBNs through them, I still consider myself as a self-publisher, for I have completed every self-publishing task, including formatting my manuscripts, on my own without eyesight; I had to upload the formatted ready-to-publish pdf files onto Lulu's servers, set the binding type, color, specification, pricing, etc.. I also found editors and artists to design my covers.

Lulu.com primarily acts like a printer. Whenever I need more copies of my books, I simply order them through Lulu.com at the printing cost without any other fee associated with it. Lulu also fulfills my orders when people order my books through them or from Amazon.com and other booksellers, like brick-and-mortar bookstore managers.

I highly recommend Lulu for several reasons:
1. There are no contracts to sign; there is only the member agreement (the usual terms of service)

2. You retain full copyrights to your work

3. There are no fees to publish any work (but you have the option to buy one of the two ISBN services they offer)

4. You can make your books available through Ingram by purchasing their ISBN service, and it will in turn make your books available on Amazon.com and other major outlets; and bookstores and libraries have the ability to order and stock your book

5. Publishing is instant; after you upload your file onto Lulu's server and specify the options, your book is immediately published once you click on the last button at the end of the simple steps. Once it is published, it is immediately available for others to order through Lulu. (Getting listed on Amazon can take up to eight weeks.)

6. You can have the option of making your book available only to yourself through Lulu, so you can order a copy to make sure everything looks okay before making it available to the public.

7. You can publish your books in different sizes and binding types (i.e. trade, textbook-sized, perfect, coiled, stitched)

8. You can use your own ISBN instead of theirs, so you will be the publisher of your work

9. Their printing quality is quite high, combined with paper of fine quality and glossy covers.

10. 24/7 availability--you can publish, revise, and order your book anytime

11. You can revise your book anytime for an unlimited number of times, and it's free, unless you have their ISBN+ Distribution where you have to pay $80 for any revision

Publishing through Lulu has been a wonderful experience. Since I do everything myself, depending solely on a computer, and cannot travel to any printers, using Lulu's printing services have been a dream come true for me.

As for marketing my books--I mainly depend on the net for that as well. I design and maintain my own website at http://www.shirleycheng.com

Yes, a blind can do all that just with plenty of passion and faith! I also enjoy appearing on radio shows, holding book signings, and I am in the process of scheduling speaking engagements in my area.

Shirley is co-author with highly acclaimed experts like Dr. Wayne Dyer and Jack Canfield in two books (including the latest installment in the bestselling "Wake Up...Live the Life You Love" series).

2) PROMOTIONAL COUPS

Patricia Fry, author of 24 books, illustrates the importance of expanding our horizons.

“In order to grow, you must also change,” she says. “For example, be prepared and willing to go in the direction that your business takes you.”

Patricia has expanded her publishing company, Matilja Press, by publishing her first book by another author. Matilja Press was established in 1983, before self-publishing was fashionable or convenient, and Patricia has published many of her own books.

However, this month she produced a book by first-time author, Rick McGrath. "`Johanna's Journey' is a true story of love, loss and faith,” says Patricia. “McGrath writes his story, and his fiancé, Johanna, tells hers through the detailed and rather provocative journals that she left behind. McGrath collected numerous pre-publication sales at a large family reunion held just weeks before publication.

Prior to the reunion, we sent galleys around to willing readers and printed their positive comments on bookmarks along with ordering information. McGrath handed these out at the reunion. When the shipment of 'Johanna's Journey' arrived, we already had numerous orders to fill. "Johanna's Journey" 212 pages, $11.95. Read this book and then go hug a loved one.”

The Military Writers Society of America - http://www.militarywriters.com (MWSA) - invites those authors who have served in the military to join. Maria Edwards, V.P., writes:

We are an association of more than 500 authors, poets, and artists, drawn together by the common bond of military service. Most of our members are active duty military, retirees, or military veterans. A few are lifelong civilians who have chosen to honor our military through their writings or their art. Our only core principle is a love of the men and women who defend this nation, and a deeply personal understanding of their sacrifice and dedication.

Our skills are varied. Some of us are world class writers, with many successful books. Others write only for the eyes of their friends and families. But each of us has a tale to tell. Each of us is a part of the fabric of Freedom.

It is our belief that if you served our nation - you have paid your dues. Therefore we do not charge monthly fees or annual dues.Benefits to membership includes being able to submit your book(s) for review and have them considered for our annual awards. While we occasionally review the work of non-members, only those books belonging to members are considered for an award. You will also be invited to participate in any MWSA sponsored events.

As we learn of events in your area or contests that may be relevant to your material, we pass that on to you as well. All of our MWSA members are also automatically enrolled as members of our sister organization, American Author's Association, and their work will then be considered for their annual awards. These are just a few of the benefits to membership.

In partnership with Francine Silverman and her Book Promotion Newsletter, we'd like to extend an invitation to join Military Writers Society of America. Interested authors should send an e-mail to Maria Edwards, MWSA Vice President, at jedward1@san.rr.com We look forward to hearing from you.

Valerie Connelly's website, http://www.valerieconnelly.com, is both a website and blog (weekly, not daily) that she had put together to expand her “ability to get publishing information out to writers, and of course to promote communication among those who visit the site,” she says.

“This is the skeletal version, and as time passes, the information will grow, the interactivity will rise, and I am hoping robust results will emerge.

“I'm inviting you to link to http://www.valerieconnelly.com from your websites by placing my site in your links listing, or if you need more, I have put the introduction page you can use to select a paragraph for placement somewhere you choose to put it.

"TO HAVE YOUR WEBSITE LINK ADDED TO THE BLOGROLL, PLEASE PROVIDE IT ALONG WITH A PARAGRAPH DESCRIPTION OF YOUR SERVICE OR YOUR BOOK. These descriptions will be posted in an easy to reach section of the BLOG. Please let me know that you will post a link on your website so we can make the circle complete. 4) FEEDBACK

Peter Bowerman comments about the feature article, "WORKING WITH THE MEDIA" by Maryglenn McCombs.

“Well written and in general, one can't argue with her advice, but, with all due respect, I think she gives way too short shrift to using the Internet to locate your target reviewers. I'm NOT talking about using the Internet to find mainstream media folks, but rather, using it to zero in on web sites and web-based organizations, groups, newsletters, and associations that cater to your target audience.

If you have a non-fiction book (and even more so with fiction, truth be told), and especially one dealing with a niche subject, and you're an unknown author, by and large, the mainstream media doesn't care about you. Sure, pound away at them long enough, and you'll eventually get someone's interest, but it'll be little return on a lot of effort. If your book fits the above profile (and even if it IS a mainstream topic, but you're still unknown), given the limited time and resources we all have, you're far better of taking a more targeted Internet approach.

This is what I did with my two self-published books (The Well-Fed Writer and TWFW: Back For Seconds; www.wellfedwriter.com). I essentially avoided mainstream media (unless I was making a physical appearance somewhere), and focused completely on my identified target audiences and the places they hung out online.

Over a period of roughly five years, during the course of two book promotion campaigns, I sent out well over 450 review copies, the bulk of which ended up yielding a review, blurb, mention, Q&A, interview, green light to write an article for the site, or, in many cases, some combination of the above. Mainstream media coverage, as a percentage of the aggregate publicity volume, was in the low single digits. The result: nearly 50,000 copies of my books in print.

Be a Sought-After Speaker
by Fern Reiss

You might be the best speaker in the world-but if you don't know how to behave on the speakers' circuit, you won't end up with a lot of bookings. Agencies and organizations far prefer to work with and book professional speakers who know how to conduct themselves. Whether you're just breaking in to a speaking career, or you've been speaking professionally for years, consider the following suggestions to catapult your speaking career to the next level:

Be flexible. If the organization wants a 90-minute keynote instead of your usual hour, accommodate them. If they've asked you to stay around for the drinks and schmoozing, be available. If they want a book signing, give it to them. The more agreeably you behave, the better your clients will like you-and if you're working with a speakers' bureau, the more they'll appreciate you, too. You shouldn't allow a client to talk you out of money or perks that are part of your standard package, but if they've particularly requested something that you can easily accommodate, be flexible. It'll pay off well in the long run.

Help publicize your clients. It's not your job to publicize events for which you've been booked-but if the opportunity presents itself, and if it's for an occasion or event that's open to the public, boy oh boy will your clients appreciate it! So include the details of their conference or workshop on your website. Highlight it in your email newsletter. Mention it in any interactions with the press. Not only will your clients sincerely appreciate it, but you'll find that it increases your prestige, too.

Toss in some freebies. Most organizations will greatly appreciate any freebies that you can include. So hand out a special report, or a customized notebook, or free copies of your book. (I've used this as a selling point for my $10,000 speaking fees-I'll toss in 500 'free' books, each valued at $20, which means that they're getting me for free.) Many organizations that can't justify a high speaking fee can afford it more easily if they have the opportunity to sell (or include in their conference price) 500 of your books. And if you've self-published, this won't cost you more than $1000.

Follow the rules. Ask the conference or event organizer what is, and isn't, permissible. Can you collect business cards? (Some organizations prefer that you don't.) Is it ok if you mention other speaking gigs or products? (Many conference organizers consider that a no no.) Would they mind if you mention your gig in your promotional materials and on your website? (When you speak to corporate clients, they'd often prefer not to be included on your list of clients.) Just ask before you act, and then follow their directions.

Follow up. If you've promised your audience something-a missing bit of information, a contact email, a resource-don't forget to follow up. And remember that a follow-up to your audience is a great idea anyway-who knows which of them may be responsible for your next speaking opportunity.

Say thanks. Always, always thank the people who brought you in-the conference organizers, the person who introduced you, anybody who was particularly helpful in facilitating your engagement. A little professionalism in this business goes a long way, and too few speakers remember this. While you're at it, remember to say thanks to your agency and, if you were able to collect their email addresses, your audience members as well.

By following these simple guidelines, you'll find that you get more speaking engagements-and better feedback from everyone involved. So get out there and make this your best speaking year ever!

2) PROMOTIONAL COUPS

Tricia Molloy had sent her book, Divine Wisdom at Work™ 10 Universal Principles for Enlightened Entrepreneurs (Aha! House 2006), to a reporter at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The reporter “was already familiar with universal principles and appreciated how I related it to business success,” explains Tricia, who had originally pitched the angle of how to use universal principles to attract your ideal job, since a related article appears each week on the front of the Sunday jobs section.

“After reviewing the idea with her editor, they decided to do it on the popularity of inspirational business books,” she says, and, voila, an article ran on Oct 8th featuring Tricia. “It's a good example of one way to get media publicity: present your book as an example of a trend. In my case, it is the growing popularity of inspirational business books,” says Tricia. “I will continue to pitch my original idea to other job-related venues - maybe even to job boards like monster.com. I first contacted her in April and followed up about a dozen times so it pays to be patient and professional persistent.”

I have been getting negative feedback from agents and editors that both the subject matter and characters of my current project are taboo areas. It is an inspirational romantic suspense, and contains no gratuitous material.

I am conducting a poll to collect opinions, and arm myself with these numbers as I query/submit. If anyone is interested in participating, I would greatly appreciate it. This is a women's novel, but any men out there who wish to be heard, your comments are most welcome.

When you respond, I will send a short description of the book, a few other details, and a couple questions I'd like answered. It will only take a few minutes for the whole process.

Please reply to debwrites@netcarrier.com Thank you.

4) FEEDBACK

Dar Hosta responds to Shirley Cheng's evaluation of Lulu because she believes there are a couple of critical facts missing from her assessment.

“First, I, like Ms. Cheng, often recommend Lulu for one reason alone, that of being able to use your own ISBN, which is essentially the social security number of your book, and many POD companies do not give their users the option to do this. So I find it amazing and ironic that anyone who went through all the steps of preparing something for Lulu in order to take advantage of the wonderful advantages this POD carries with it, would hesitate to purchase and use their own ISBN. If your book becomes popular, if the demand for it increases, you may one day decide to do a quantity print run through a non-POD printer.

"But, you need to understand that Lulu is not going to release that ISBN number to you, upon which all previous sales have been built, so that you can now take it to another printer. If you use Lulu's ISBN number, you are tied to them for their printing services of that title unless you decide to change the title's ISBN number. And, like changing your social security number, this would be an identification nightmare, not the kind of confusion that the self-publisher needs in the dog-eat-dog world of self-marketing and scrambling for sales. I have long criticized other PODs because of their ISBN usage rules and have commended Lulu for allowing authors to use their own. It would be foolish, in my opinion, to not take advantage of Lulu's most attractive feature.

"Second, while I truly believe that Lulu is the best POD option for authors who want book-in-hand for direct sales or for a lower commission percentage (say, 20-30%), anyone who has priced quantity printing against a POD like Lulu knows that it is difficult to profit from the relatively high per unit price in a wholesale market. What Ms. Cheng does not reveal in her article is that, according to the Lulu Book Cost Calculator (which is there on Lulu and great for figuring costs), her per unit cost of "The Revelation of a Star's Endless Shine" would be $18.64.

"I checked on Amazon and saw that she had to put a hefty $36.00 price tag on this paperback book to cover her manufacturing costs, her "royalty," Lulu's profit percentage and Amazon's cut. And, by the way, though the cover image does take a while time to be posted I've never had to wait eight weeks to get my listings up on Amazon. Once I'd set up my Advantage Account, the written content I submitted for my books was up within a matter of days, and this has been the case for all three of my books. Furthermore, industry standard dictates a 3 month window of time between all submissions and publish date anyway. For my December 2006 title, for example, I prepared my Amazon content and sent out my review copies in August which leaves plenty of time for everyone.

"I think that the real benefits in using Lulu are exactly what Shirley Cheng outlined in her article. Lulu is a wonderful resource for people who want inventory for speaking engagements, for those who perhaps want to create a prototype to submit for traditional publishing, or for those who simply want that magical physicality of their own work to hold in their hands. But I would caution users to not give up the opportunity to be in total possession of their own work by opting to use Lulu's ISBNs, and to be aware of the high per unit production costs that will make a book difficult to profit from in a wholesale market.

"I might add that I do not use Lulu for my print runs and find their manufacturing costs difficult to swallow after my exposure to offset printing costs that make my wholesale market participation possible, both through bookstores as well as on Amazon, both of whom take anywhere from 40-55% of the retail book price as their share."

7) SURPRISES

When Shirley and her mother arrived at Borders on Oct. 6th for Shirley's second book signing, they noticed that the store only had one copy of each of her titles they ordered on display. Shirley and her mom were puzzled because they should have had 17 display copies. “`We sold them!` was the answer we received when we asked,” Shirley reports. “I was almost speechless when I heard that. They had sold 14 of the display copies before my signing and just reserved the last display copy for each title. I wonder if more copies would be sold if they had more; guess I'll never know.”

Shirley is the author of DARING QUESTS OF MYSTICS (Lulu Press 2005), an autobiography, THE REVELATION OF A STAR'S ENDLESS SHIINE: A Young Woman's Autobiography of a 20-Year Tale of Trials and Tribulations (Lulu Press 2005), and DANCE WITH YOUR HEART: Tales and Poems That the Heart Tells (Lulu Press 2004). Shirley is co-author of WAKE UP…LIVE THE LIFE YOU LOVE: FINDING YOUR LIFE'S PASSION (2ND edition 2007) with such highly acclaimed experts as Dr. Wayne Dyer, Tony Robbins, and Brian Tracy, and of 101 GREAT WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR LIFE, VOL 2 (Self Improvement Online 2006), with some of the world's top experts and bestselling authors, including Jack Canfield, John Gray, Bob Proctor, Alan Cohen and Richard Carlson. http://www.shirleycheng.com

INTRODUCTION

I am collaborating with The Virtuous Women Radio Show, which is a showcase for new non-fiction authors. The show offers three packages. The basic package is inexpensive and includes an audio of the interview, and each package will now include a copy of my book, Book Marketing from A-Z. If any of you fit the description of a really “new” non-fiction author, you may want to take advantage of this opportunity to be interviewed on a radio show. http://www.avirtuouswomantour.com

I need help. At the Infinity conference in September, I spoke to other authors who told me they prepare their books in PDF format so they know how they will look when it's published. Well, my computer does not have PDF so I downloaded Adobe, only to learn that it's simply a reader. Then I read in Peter Bowerman's book about http://www.PrimoPDF.com and downloaded it. I was able to install the Primo PDF in my printer as instructed but have not been able to save my Word document (book) in the PDF template. There are no instructions on that in the on-line manual provided. Can anyone tell me how to do this? Or do I need someone to save my book in their PDF file and send it to me? Or must I spring for $300 for Acrobat Professional?

(1) FEATURE ARTICLE

The Business of Self-Publishing

By Dar Hosta

Self-publishing is not only the means to get your ideas onto the pages of a physical book, but is also a business, and it brings with it all the responsibilities and expenses that any business investment would bring. If you would hesitate to become an independent entrepreneur, self-publishing may not be right for you. There is an enormous and continual learning curve, and there are monetary investments that may take time to “break even,” but the fantastic personal and financial rewards are there to be reaped for the individual who is willing to look at all the parts, make good decisions, and keep at the job at hand.

When you become a publisher, you pay for and do everything. Let this really sink into your brain because, regardless of how many times I say this, I always get questions like, “So, who fronts the money for the print run?” The answer is, YOU. This also means that you have more than a little homework to do in order to find a printer or a print broker who is appropriate for your book needs and priced competitively, not to mention a book designer, both topics for future articles. There are no advances in self-publishing and, furthermore, every aspect of the book's production and dissemination, from book design to the boxes and tape they get shipped in, is paid for by Y-O-U. The good news, and this is really good news in my opinion, is that when your book sells, all the profits are yours to keep.

To put this in perspective, let's say that you create a book that experiences very moderate success in the mainstream retail and library market. Being really conservative for the sake of example, let's say that you could sell 2,000 books in a year and that the retail price of this book is $17.00, a typical price for a trade hardback children's book (FYI, the profit margin for hardback books always exceeds that of paperback and of board book format, and are just nicer, in my view).

The cost of printing this book, at this quantity, overseas is going to be about $2.50 per book. It is worth noting that if you were able to afford, and more importantly sell 8K books, you would pay only $1.25 per book (remember when I said quantity is the name of the game?). It is going to cost you about another $1,600 for freight and customs from another country, presumably China or Hong Kong.

While I am not including, here, charges for proofs (usually around $200 per set), file preparation/art scanning (about $1,700 for a 32 page book) book design and layout (usually done professionally for $100-175 per hour and taking approximately 30 hours), your total bill is now at $6,600, but the wholesale value of your books (at a 55% discount, per Baker and Taylor) is $15,300. I am not adding in shipping costs to Baker and Taylor, (library wholesalers, like Follett and Brodart, generally pay for ground shipping while also using only a 50% discount) or the cost of supplies, but I am also not adding in that some of your sales might be to independent stores at a lower discount (generally 40% for independent authors, sometimes less), school sales at author visits (even lower or no discount), or straight retail sales at cover price.

Assuming that you can sell all these books, you have just made over $8,000. Imagine, then, what kind of profit you could generate if you have several titles in print that all perform moderately and consistently well. Now, I admittedly don't know exactly what the going rate for a children's book royalty advance is these days, though I have an idea, but when I went to an author's day at a regional school late last spring and told my fellow authors that I had independently sold over 13K books in a year, they started asking me questions.

If, like I did, you get a fast order from a big chain, that big chain will place an order with your wholesaler (i.e., Baker and Taylor) for about 1-2K books, and then you will have sold all your books and you'll use your profits from the first press run to pay for the second. If both big chains order, you'll be forced to go back to press, but now you will have the capital to pay for most of the run in cash. Chain sales, however, can be both a blessing and a curse, as they are always “open sales”, which means they can be returned. All of these speculations hinge on the notion, though, that your book will sell, and there are many, many things to consider in the area of marketing a book and making it into a success, some of which will undoubtedly cost you more money.

It is a common stereotype that we creative types do not always have a mind for business and, unfortunately, this is often true. I can imagine that some of you reading this might be thinking, Why bother with all this? Who wants to learn all this on top of trying to crank out a book a year? Well, I have always been a sort of go-it-alone type of artist, never feeling quite so romantic about my work as to keep me from thinking about it in terms of “product” and “business” regards. Having said this, last year I was a guest speaker at a literacy conference in Vermont. One of my fellow author/illustrators was there (I will not name her here, but suffice it to say that she has a very well established and respected career in children's books that deal with a certain black and white dog who teaches kindergarten…)

I was thrilled to be able to attend her seminar because I love seeing other artists and authors at work and to hear the stories of their journeys, and she was a delight to listen to. She had with her an artist's dummy for the current project she was working on and, much to my pleasure, shared it with the small and rather intimate audience. Now, I do in fact work with an editor, so I understand that we would not be wise to live in a creative vacuum, but this fellow illustrator, as she showed us the dummy, had a note from an editor or an art director that called for changes on nearly each and every page.

I thought of the year I'd spent, lovingly creating my first book, I Love The Night, an artist's experiment if ever there were one, and cringed at the thought of changing a single word or moving a single image. I have been told by other children's authors that most editors would not force them to make a change they absolutely did not want to make but, as a creative type, I would be leaving out a very critical point if I did not tell you that one of the very best things about self-publishing is that the final rejection or acceptance comes from the same place the money does. Y-O-U!

2) GRIST FOR YOUR MILL

It has been brought to my attention that Dr. Laura Schlessinger devotes a portion of her radio show to promoting books.

Here's the blurb from her website:

“On my radio program, I recommend relevant books which continue the discussions on topics that are significant to our lives: the sanctity of marriage, the welfare of our children, religion, and our values and moral fiber. Below is a list of some of these books. New books are always added so check back. I know these books will inspire and enlighten you."
-- Dr. Laura

You can go to http://www.drlaura.com/reading to see some examples of the kinds of books she likes.

Joe Hearn, a guest on my radio show, said he mailed a cover letter and a copy of his workbook, If Something Happens To Me, to Laura and she featured it on the show - which, of course, boosted book sales. He has a video from that segment and lifted her words to form a blurb for his website. Her address is:

3) PROMOTIONAL COUPS

A suggestion from Max Anderson:

If you have a Barnes and Noble, Borders, or other big book store near you, have you gotten to know their community relations manager yet? I recently met with mine at Barnes and Noble. I'd been having trouble getting my books back into the store, after my publisher changed distributors. It was kind of crazy because my books had sold out twice, yet the manager refused to try to stock them again.

So, I met with the community relations manager. We had a great meeting as she listened to why I was writing for reluctant boy readers. Normally they schedule authors for events at least two months in advance. But, after our meeting, she included me in a night, for area educators, that was less than two weeks away. This resulted in invitations to speak in 5 schools.

But, more importantly, she put me in touch with their small press office in New York so we can pursue a regional buy of my books for all their stores in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin. I'll also have my own event in January, and another one for teachers in the spring.

It also means that my books should be available in this store again in the near future. Sometimes these meetings may strike fear in your heart, but remember, the worst thing they can do to you is say no. And, think about it, they're in the business of selling books. They also tend to love authors.

I encourage you to go outside your comfort zone, and make the call.

Max is author of action-adventures & mysteries for readers 8 - 13
