PERSISTENCE PAYS OFF

     By Francine Silverman

Persistence does pay off, not always immediately or in the way we expect. My own experience and that of my subscribers illustrate that hard work and perseverance reap rewards.

In an example of my own promotional efforts, I recently sat at my computer for two days straight, emailing pitches about my book to small publishers both here and abroad. In the past, I’ve picked up a few subscribers that way and one publisher even purchased the book.

But during these two days, my mailbox was virtually empty and I was despairing that I was spinning my wheels. Then lo and behold, a publisher contacted me, asking for a copy of the book for consideration for its recommended books list and its bookstore – much more than I even hoped for.

It’s moments like these that confirm my belief in persistence. True, the rewards are as random as surf on sand but, hey, who’s to argue with success?

“Promoting is time-consuming and sometimes frustrating,” agrees Marilyn Morris, author of Sabbath’s Room (PublishAmerica 2001) and Once a Brat (PublishAmerica 2002). “But persistence pays off. I carry copies of both books in my car. After all, I read that John Grisham began his career by selling his books out of the truck of his car in the courthouse square at Tupelo, MS.” http://www.thewriterslife.net/marilyncelestemorris.html

“Write a lot of books and don’t get discouraged,” urges award-winning romance author B.J. Daniels, who sold 37 short stories as Barbara Johnson Smith and later sold 28 Harlequin Intrigues as B.J. Daniels. (When she started at Harlequin, authors weren’t allowed to use their real names so she came up with B.J. Daniels after her daughter Danielle). “I used to sell about 50 percent of the short stories I wrote but I’m stubborn so I just kept writing them. It took a long time to get my first short story published. The editor kept saying: ‘Tone down the adventure.’ She finally bought one with lots of adventure. I think I wore her down.” http://www.bjdaniels.com

Clayton Bye is a self-publisher whose first four books were promoted locally – with a modicum of success. However, he’s changed his focus with his fifth book, a fantasy novel called The Sorcerer’s Key. “I personally sold over 1,000 copies of my first book, How To Get What You Want From Life, by consistently talking up the book – in private seminars, in colleges, in high schools, in libraries, to business people, to teachers, to students, to anyone else who would listen,” he says. “I never went outside Northwestern Ontario, and the book wasn’t offered in bookstores. I just wanted to gauge the market.

“My strategy hasn’t changed much over the years. I still believe in consistency of action:
Write every day. Make new contacts each working day. Sell some books every day. Pursue your dream in enjoyable ways – every day.

“And in case you’re wondering at my relative obscurity…The Sorcerer’s Key is the first book I’ve written that was designed to compete in the national market. I’m just getting started.” http://www.claytonbye.com
