Screenwriting Advice Article!

You are the Box Office Smash: The Personal Screenplay
by Gordy Hoffman

Right this very second, in the heart of every struggling, undiscovered screenwriter, in the dark, hidden corner deep within, there is a voice, a clear whisper, saying one thing:

You're never gonna figure this out.

And this is not referring to the story with its gaping hole, the finale missing a payoff, the hit and miss humor, the flat title.

I'm talking about freedom. The freedom to work as a screenwriter. Compensation for a home for family and a life. The resources to wake up and ply your craft and pay the freight, without obstacle. The chance to see your writing made into pictures, to work with the industry's best, to fulfill this goal of professional screenwriter. Hollywood success.

Behind this voice is the idea that somehow, some way, you'll find the hero, or the hook, logline or pitch that will punch your golden ticket. If you could only figure out what the studio wants, if you can only get a solid bead to this game, you know you can write and execute. What is the script I should write to get an agent? What is the one that will sell? It's not that I don't know how to write, I know how to write screenplays, I just need to know what they want, even though I think I know what they want, but I don't think I have the idea that they want. Yeah.

I'm not gonna figure this out, whispers the voice.

Why this uneasiness? Does it originate within ourselves? I don't think so. But where does it come from? The daily obsession with box office grosses? The news of the seven figure deals to newbies? The endless procession of boneheadedly conceived franchises-in-waiting arriving in the theatres every Friday? People winning Academy Awards for movies you would not be caught dead writing? Recognizing an idea you came up with years ago on your couch, produced with a $130 million budget drowning in CGI?

All these things are but a few of the possible reasons why this seeds unhealthy doubt and confusion in the modern screenwriter. Tracking these forces outside us and beyond our control in an effort to trudge the path to a successful screenwriting career will prove to most to be unproductive and corrosive. Basically, trying to figure out what Hollywood wants will land us in a resentment that makes "giving up" a sane response to the very challenge which used to inspire us. In short, we cannot chase a perceived trend and remember our dreams.

You cannot look at the marketplace and find your voice. You can find ideas, trends, and inspiration there, perhaps, but you can find these things driving in traffic as well. But listening to your voice is the key to creating original, compelling stories.

Your life is your own story. You have a completely unique thread of experience. By allowing yourself to express these emotional experiences, your screenplay, your story, will be different from any other and powerful, as original as your fingerprint.

Why is it powerful? When we have the courage to be specific about what we know about living, we create an authentic world an audience recognizes as the life they are living on planet Earth. This connects your audience to your story. This connection is the foundation of the phenomena of story.

Why does story mean so much to us? We recognize the triumphs and tragedies of our lives, with all the hilarity and tears. By seeing it, we are validated and it underscores meaning and purpose to living.

If we don't use what we've collected in life in our hearts and spirits, then our story loses its authenticity and the connection the audience should make fails. They do not see themselves, and when they leave the theater, they do not call their friends. When people do not call their friends after seeing a movie, the movie bombs.

When a writer opens their person to their work, when they allow themselves to be vulnerable, to risk exposure of the secrets of their life story, they take a huge step towards creating a screenplay of substantial value, a screenplay with a greater potential of a large number of tickets sold.

This is precisely why art and commerce have remained bedfellows for thousands of years. To look at the relationship between art and commerce as adversarial or incompatible is just plain foolish. Art happens when people invest their spirits in their work without fear, and story is artful when the writing is truthful and the writer is authentic.

And what do we have to be honest about? We can only lie about what we know, and we can only tell the truth about what we know. And that is what has happened to us, our life story. This is what we share.

This is not a pitch to write "what you know." This is not about writing stories about where you work or where you live. This is about writing about what you felt. You can imagine characters and worlds and actions and speech you've never personally experienced, but if you remember to infuse your choices with your emotional and spiritual struggles and victories as a human being, your screenplay will be different in the very best sense of the word.

The question you have to answer is not what does Hollywood want today. The question is how honest of a writer do you want to be. I guarantee you can write a blockbuster, you can write a box office hit. This will happen when you find an audience. And the correct path to this crowd of people is listening to yourself. If you practice, you will develop an inner ear for who you are and what you know and you will become masterful in loading your work with your fingerprints. Writing is personal work. You are the guitar. You are the box of paint. Give of that and your audience will remember why life is good and they will talk of you.

INTRODUCTION

Well, it appears that McFarland & Co. is my publisher! The editor promised to send me a contract later this week. It's a large reference publisher, whose major market is libraries. They do not market to book stores, although book stores may order copies. Once I receive the contract, I will dance around the room, after all the aggravation I have had between hiring an agent who did not produce and publishers who made empty promises.

In conjunction with the book, I am beginning my radio show, The Radio Host Show, on Blog Talk Radio in mid-March. I am using events and holidays as my guide. March is Athletic Training Month so I am interviewing sports show hosts.

I cannot begin to tell you how impressed I am with the management team at Blog Talk Radio. Not only does Christie Sweet hold a daily one-hour tutorial to teach the mechanics of using all the links and gizmos on the website when hosting a show but she has helped me personally over the phone to learn the phone and audio system. She is as sweet as her name. Moreover, an email is sent to you a few minutes before your show to remind you. Blog Talk Radio does not charge its hosts, which is no doubt why it has shows in the thousands. But since we are not paying, who would have thought the personnel would be so helpful?

Most Successful Authors Today Use
The Flip Side of Marketing - The Web

by Charles Jacobs

This amazing new technology has totally revolutionized the marketplace, and more and more authors are taking advantage. It has flipped the way marketers market, the way promoters promote and the way writers wrestle their way to the top of the search engines.

If you haven't grasped this new concept, your online book promotions will continue to founder. Unfortunately too many in the book industry, from beginning writers in their twenties to old pros in their retirement years, are still bogged down in the antiquated approach of reaching out to find their customers.

Marketing on the Web has reversed that process. Today's Web surfer is reaching out for YOU. Starved for meaningful information, the burgeoning ranks of surfers turn to online sources rather than offline. The proliferation of web sites, blogs and digital feeds from print media offers unquestionable evidence of this trend.

Mastering Online Selling
The key to online selling is not simply announcing the availability of information or product as traditional marketing has always strived to do by obtaining press coverage and interviews.

They're both important to generating hype about your book, but the key online is determining who is searching for that information and why.

Marketers have traditionally relied on a two-fold approach: creating demand for a product and then announcing its availability. In other words simply stating here I am and I have something that you might want. That doesn't work on the Internet. The trick is to discover who is searching for the information or product that you offer. Once you know that, you ferret out the triggers that will bring them to your web site.

What words or phrases are they using to find their wanted product as they enter their requests in the Search Engines? Where else are they searching and how? Once you know these answers, you open the floodgates and surfers pour onto your web site. That's what the new industry of Search Engine Optimization is all about.

Using Keywords
You have heard the term "keywords" time and again. These are the words surfers use to find a source for the product they seek. Companies like Wordtracker have sprung up to help you determine the most effective keywords to move your product. They help you search for synonyms that surfers might use, and show you how many web sites compete using those terms? Find them on the Web by searching for “key words.”

With Search Engines monitoring millions of sites, the more frequently the keyword is used by others, the less chance you have to reach a meaningful position in the engines' rankings. For example, I have found that the most obvious keywords in my own work, "retirement" and "writing," are overwhelmingly competitive, forcing me to search far beyond them for other effective words. But I also combine these two words, as I have in the name of my web site http://www.retirement-writing.com to create a discrete key phrase.

Other Options
There are several very effective ways to supplement your keyword efforts. Linking, particularly inbound links from other popular web sites that deal with the same subject, are extremely effective in moving you up on the search engines listings. Links provide a benefit to both parties. The inbound link will bring to your site readers who may never have heard of you before discovering the link on their favorite site. The sending site benefits by enriching its readers with an additional source of information.

The "spiders" that the search engines send out to crawl through web sites and evaluate them for positioning on the engine's listing are highly impressed by quality links. They follow links and in that way constantly discover new sites to evaluate.

However, it is important that your links be pertinent to your subject matter and come from well-respected sites. The quantity of links you establish is nowhere near as important as the quality. In fact, if the spiders suspect that you are amassing links randomly through "link farms" or other sources, they will punish you.

Press Feeds
With an estimated 50 million readers of print publications turning to the Internet to get their news today, News Engines have become a prime source for exposure for Internet marketers. In 2006, Nielsen/Net Ratings reported that Yahoo! News, for example, reaches almost 30 million readers, far more than the New York Times and the Washington Post combined. Companies like PR Newswire and USANews.net are now available to aggregate press releases and feed them to the news outlets.

A new technology, Real Simple Syndication (RSS), has blossomed recently that allows you to send material out directly to other sites and to news groups without the intervention of an aggregator.

Distributing Articles
Perhaps not quite as new as the technologies discussed above, writing and distributing articles on pertinent subjects is a tried and true way of obtaining visitors to your web site and upping your ranking on the search engines. The universe of Internet surfers is voracious in its hunger for information. These surfers will not only read your articles wherever they find them, but, if impressed by what you write, will head right to your site for more.

The articles cannot be advertisements or obviously self-serving. That will turn off readers. They must be factual and informative. However, at the end of the piece in a brief biography you are free to mention your writings, your web site or any other means of making contact. It serves as your mini advertisement. Articles may be sent directly to other sites and blogs or can be sent to article distributors like http://www.eZinearticles.com or http://www.isnare.com, two of my favorites.

Take advantage of this new world of topsy-turvy marketing and see your book and article sales soar.

Can You Pounce On A Breaking News Event?

By Scott Lorenz

Can you pounce on a breaking news event? Not everybody can, but if your subject has breaking news potential then you'd better be ready to take advantage of it.

One such opportunity presented itself to Westwind Communications on February 19, 2008 when Fidel Castro announced his resignation. One of my author clients has a gorgeous coffee table photo book on CUBA and has made 40 plus quasi illegal trips to the island nation. He's an American citizen and expert on CUBA. http://www.corazonpress.com.

Having pitched this book and his story to all major media from Good Morning America and Nightline to Syndicated Radio, all of the big media outlets said - I'm not exaggerating - "Sure we'll cover it… when Fidel dies."

So, like vultures circling above, we've been waiting for every slip, fall, missed parade, bad medical report about Fidel so that we could jump on the opportunity. It finally came at 5:30am on the morning of February 19, 2008 with the announcement of Fidel's resignation. That was almost as good as the dictator passing on… less drama but still worth covering since it announced a change in power of the United States' long time nemesis of 50 years.

So, I dusted off the release about Fidel's death that had been sitting in wait for two years, changed the headline to reflect his resignation, and a few other items and out it went to my carefully maintained and targeted list of media contacts and put it on the wire by 6AM while everyone else was still sleeping.

The result was outstanding. CBS Radio immediately saw the release, set up an interview that ran in Detroit all day and night. Then National Public Radio set up an in-studio interview as did WJR and WCSX radio. Print media got into the act with interviews in The Ann Arbor News http://www.mlive.com/news/annarbornews/index.ssf?/base/news-26/120352203518630.xml&coll=2, Detroit News, Observer & Eccentric http://www.hometownlife.com/apps/pbcs.dll/gallery?Avis=C5&Dato=20080225&Kategori=NEWS&Lopenr=225001&Ref=PH and Oakland Press http://www.theoaklandpress.com/stories/022008/loc_20080220268.shtml. We even got interest, but unfortunately no story since the book was not newly released, from the Wall Street Journal.

Then, one of Amazon's Top Ten reviewers asked for a review copy, which, by itself could create a ground swell of book sales. (thousands have already read his review http://www.amazon.com/Cuba-Photographs-Jack-Kenny/dp/0976834901). A travel writer from MSNBC http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23278430 wanted to get Kenny's expert advice on traveling to CUBA and the media inquires are still coming in. Interestingly enough, three producers and reporters called me after they got to their office and found out that Fidel had resigned, needed a Cuba expert, did a Google search and found my press release on top of the Google News section. I love technology!

This whole operation was a success because I constantly monitor the news and set Google Alerts http://www.google.com/alerts?hl=en to watch for key news items. And, of course, I had the release ready to go. Everything was thought out, my client was ready - for 2 years. The gun was loaded, cocked, and ready to fire.

And you know another upside of this? I can still use a version of my original "Fidel's Death…." release later! Don't think bad things about me, somebody somewhere might have your obituary already written too!

When should you send out a press release? My acid test is that if it's newsworthy and if it's timely and useful to the reader, send it. It's that simple.

There are many factors to weigh when considering the need to send out a press release. As a publicist I have sent thousands of releases over the years and while there are no hard and fast rules, the most important factor is that you've got to make sure it's newsworthy and useful to the reader. Anything else and it's just a waste of time for the members of the media.

So what press release do you have in your hip pocket? Are you ready when breaking news hits?

It is given to those writers, authors, musicians, editors, etc. who have displayed excellence, clarity, and a non-compromising stance when assisting in humanity's spiritual awakening.

The award is presented by Avatar Publications, in association with "ALL THINGS THAT MATTER," a blog devoted to exploring issues that confront today's society.
