BOOK PROMOTION NEWSLETTER Issue 79: March 1, 2006 ISSN 1545-5599 BOOK PROMOTION NEWSLETTER Issue 79: March 1, 2006 EDITOR: FRANCINE SILVERMAN http://www.bookpromotionnewsletter.com http://www.nystatetravel.com Issued every other Wednesday since 2003 =================================================== Please consider adding http://www.AuthorsandExperts.com and http://www.SchoolBookings.com to your list of resources. These are great places for authors, experts, and speakers to connect with members of the media, those searching for speakers, and schools. Free to schools and media members and an economical resource for authors and experts. =================================================== INTRODUCTION After considerable research, I have found an Internet radio station that I can work with - Achieve Radio, http://www.achieveradio.com. Beginning in mid-March, I will be hosting my own show called Book Marketing with Fran, on which I'll be interviewing authors, publicists and publishers. Naturally, many of you will be my guests and hopefully the show will help put us on the map by bringing unique perspectives on book promotion. I found Achieve Radio by searching for venues for my clients. The station has, up until now, hosted mostly shows on spirituality, but the general manager, Bill Schreiner, is anxious to expand the range of subjects. The radio show has not yet aired but already there was a rift. One venue I found was May-Leilani Schmidt's show on Achieve Radio. Six subscribers and clients, Linda Pynaker, Bonnie Cehovet, Debora Hill, Gigi Miner, Yvonne Perry, and Myrna Lou Goldbaum, were to be guests on one of her two shows, Universal Spiritual Connection and Mastery Minds in March, April and May. In the interim, I told May I would be hosting a show on Achieve Radio and she congratulated me. Up until this time, she appeared to be the "nice" person she was purported to be. On Saturday, she released a bomb - she is canceling their shows in deference to me. Given my show, she wrote the authors, "I feel your loyalty and support should be with her." Naturally, I fired off an email to her - and so did the authors, expressing dismay at her actions. Needless to say, she ruined my weekend. On Monday, May wrote all the authors an email assuring them she wasn't angry at them and would have them on a future show. In an email to me, Bonnie paraphrased her response to May: "I told her I would not appear on a future show with her because I could never trust her again. If the producer of her show knew how she was conducting herself, I wonder how long she would stay on the air. I was insulted with her e-mail this a.m., saying that she 'would have us all on her show in the future,' with no dates mentioned, and no apologies for her actions. I can guarantee that your show will go better than this! ;-)" My husband insists I'm naive and never should have told her about my show. But who could have imagined that she'd turn on a dime? Then I spoke to May on the phone late Monday morning and realized that she did indeed have my interests at heart. She said while her human side feels terrible, she had to follow the direction she received from beyond - that this was not the right time to have them on her show since my show was starting. "Anyone who truly walks in the light will always put that person first," she said. "I never meant to hurt anybody - especially you. I would really like to see you move forward. That excites me tremendously. I know if you succeed, then I will succeed. We are all in it together." It's been quite a few days!!! ---------------------------------- In This Issue: 1) Promotional Coups 2) Grist for Your Mill 3) Contest 4) Feedback 5) Surprises 6) A Good Question 7) Progress Report 8) Subscriber Seminars 9) Kudos 1) PROMOTIONAL COUPS Fiction and non-fiction author Pamela S. Thibodeaux, co-founder and a member of the Bayou Writers Group in Lake Charles, LA., http://www.pamelathibodeaux.com, contributed the following tips: * Press kits are easy to make and relatively inexpensive; a simple 2-pocket folder with a copy of the cover on front and back and info inside (summary or blurb, press release, bio, business cards, reviews). Send them to everyone you can think of and/or afford to! Follow up with a phone call, set up interviews if possible. * Send Press releases to every newspaper in your state and the state where your book is set http://www.usnpl.com. Send information to your local publications EVERY TIME you have a speaking engagement or participate in an event; these are newsworthy and get you publicity! * Map out book stores in a 20, 50 or 100-mile radius of your home and schedule a book signing. Do a web search for Bookstores+YourState; narrow down your search by using key words like; Independent, Christian, Wholesale, etc. * Libraries are another great way to promote your work. Many have a budget to buy books and will gladly purchase those from local authors. Call your local library and get a listing of all the libraries in your state. Don't forget School Libraries! Check with your local and state School Board. * Bookmarks are easy, inexpensive - if you make them yourself. Format your page into 3 columns, insert a picture of your cover, list your publisher, your website and your snail and email address on the front underneath a picture of you. On the back, put a blurb of your book. Be sure to give a short blurb or some other information on your next release (if you have it). * Create an “envelope flyer.” A small announcement similar to a bookmark to put it in EVERY envelope you send out of your house and hand out to everyone you come in contact with...bank tellers, retail clerks, leave them at beauty shops/drug stores/libraries/etc., leave them with your tip when you go out and eat. * Harvest names and addresses! When possible, get the name and address of EVERYONE who buys your books. Another way to do this is to give something away at every author event you participate in. Pass out little forms with Name, Address, Email Address on them. Include a box followed by: Check here if you DO NOT want information on my books! (if they do not check the box, they are fair game). Harvest email addresses too. Be careful with this, but people who sign your guest book & email you for whatever reason, Internet list groups, etc. are all potential readers! ALWAYS offer them the chance to be removed from your address book and oblige if requested. One more tip about email addresses, when you do a bulk mailing to everyone in your address book, bcc everyone but your first one...this way no one can harvest your customer list therefore protecting their privacy. * Use the Internet. One of the most important things you can do as a writer is get a website. Most ISP providers offer some free space so use it! List your Website EVERYWHERE! Paying-traffic can help with free and other options; check them out! http://www.paying-traffic.com/index.php Another way to use the Internet is to get out there and list your book at every FREE site you can find! REMEMBER, Amazon.com, BAMM.com, and all the other online sources. After you get your books listed there, check out dearreader.com. Don't forget FREE Link & Banner Exchanges with other authors. Places like Word Museum - http://www.wordmuseum.com - & Bookcrazy.com - http://www.bookcrazy.com - and Inspirational Reader -http://www.theinspirationalreader.com - charge a fee to list but provide a lot of publicity for their members. There are also smaller promo groups such as Divas of Romance - http://www.divasofromance.com - that offer a lot of publicity for a small fee. There are as many ways to promote a book as there are bookstores to carry them. Use your imagination. I know you have one.... you're a writer! Three great books on Marketing & Promoting your E-books are: 101 Ways to Promote Your E-book for Free! E-book Marketing Made Easy Over 100 Ways to Promote Your E-book Online By: Rusty Fischer: Freelancer86@aol.com and Promotion for Paupers by Karen Syed, Echelon Press @ http:///www.echelonpress.com ---------------------------------- Many authors donate proceeds from their books to charities as a way of helping the charity and promoting their books. Marc Littman, author of the new novel, EDDIE AND ME ON THE SCRAP HEAP (Booksurge 2006), has embarked on a swap arrangement that benefits both parties. The book is about a 9-year-old boy with autism, inspired by his own son. “I've reached out to autism organizations around the world to link my book and let me pen articles I can share with parents and others,” he says. “As an incentive, I have offered to split half my royalties with those organizations. I've also asked for speaking opportunities and plan on displaying my book at autism conventions.” [Editor's Note - It's always nice when a subscriber finds helpful tips in this newsletter. In Marc's case it was the “recent feature article about to how to generate interest at your booth.”] **************************************** 2) GRIST FOR YOUR MILL Shirley Cheng is a busy radio guest. She will be interviewed on Lillian's SpeakOut! on March 8, 2006. The podcast recording will be available for listening soon afterwards at http://lilliandme.libsyn.com She will be a guest on The Donna Seebo Show on KKNW 1150 AM on March 14 from 11:00 a.m. to noon EST (8:00-9:00 a.m. PST). This program is streamed on the Internet live at http://www.1150KKNW.com so people can listen to it from anywhere in the world. Tune in to WBNW 1120AM or WPLM 1390AM on Saturday, March 4 at noon EST to hear Shirley's interview on The Brass Ring® radio show with host, producer Gina Ghioldi, the founder and President of The Law Office of Gina M. Ghioldi, P.C. ---------------------------------- I have been corresponding with David Mitchell, one of the top Amazon reviewers, since sending him an Expert Sheet on business authors. He reviews business books and non-fiction Christian books based on historical work (such as archeology), Biblical analysis, personal memoirs and doctrinal evaluations. He doesn't review New Age, romance, anti-religious and books without social benefit. If your books fall into categories he reviews, David writes that he has “made a commitment to raise $10,000 this year for Habitat for Humanity through writing reviews of books. Authors can submit books for me to consider and if the book seems worthy of the effort, I will review a book if the author or publisher will donate $150 to Habitat for Humanity.” To read his profile, visit: http://www.amazon.com/gp/pdp/profile/A1K1JW1C5CUSUZ/ref=cm_aya_pdp_profile/002-6553581-1673667 ----------------------------------- Yvonne Perry is collecting inspirational speeches for a book she is co-writing entitled "Growth Through Speaking" (Inspirational Writings). She would like to include speeches other people have given. This is a non-profit project so you would not receive royalties; however, your name will appear as the author of any speech you submit, and a short bio about you will be included in the book. Please send speeches or inquiries to write_on_yvonne@comcast.net. ***************************************** 3) CONTEST T. L. Cooper, author of the novel ALL SHE EVER WANTED (Xlibris Corporation 2002) (http://www.tlcooper.com), contributed the following: Reprieve granted for those wishing to submit an entry for the Murder in the Grove Mystery Contest! Popular Fiction Association of Idaho, Inc. extended the deadline to March 31, 2006! Prizes include a $25 gift card from Barnes & Noble, a manuscript evaluation from an editor or agent, and a detailed scoring sheet on various aspects of the submission. Please see the website, http://www.murderinthegrove.com, for submission guidelines. ************************************************* 4) FEEDBACK Janice Law had asked about purchasing inexpensive promotional items. When the responses began coming in I realized we had already covered that so I emailed the suggestions to her directly. Don Keith's response may or may not be what Janice is seeking, but it's new. “I'm sure many of your subscribers would be interested in a web site called Cafe Press,” he says. “There you can set up your own online "store," selling items imprinted with anything you want, like book covers, logos, your signature, your caricature, a slogan, or whatever. Items range from nice jackets to baseball caps, tee shirts, key chains, coffee mugs, and the like. There is no minimum quantity and the only charge is a small annual fee to maintain the store. When someone orders an item (that can even be you, the store owner, of course), the item is imprinted and shipped, like print-on-demand. The store owner then receives a portion of the money for the sale, even if he or she was the 'customer.' “The prices for the items are quite reasonable and with the 'profit' that goes back to the store 'owner,' it may be an inexpensive way to order coffee mugs or key chains for your own use without having to buy large quantities you may never use. I'm sure a visit to http://www.cafepress.com would spark some ideas for many writers!” Don's latest book is IN THE COURSE OF DUTY (NAL/Penguin), the true (and very human) story of one of the most remarkable naval vessels in history, a featured selection of The Military Book Club. http://www.donkeith.com ************************************************* 5) SURPRISES Janet Wellington reports that CBS had a film crew at the Romance Writers of America conference last summer, which was finally aired - on the February 12, 2006 episode of CBS Sunday Morning with Charles Osgood. Recalling the conference, she says, “Cameras scanned the room where over 450 authors appear at the event. As it happened, they picked my book [DREAMQUEST Dorchester Love Spell 2004] as an 'example' -- among many, many other covers!!!” “I was so pleased and surprised -- what a treat! A few people have contacted me (though of course I don't have the heart to tell them it was just a lucky accident that my cover made it!), so it's been fun to be able to say, 'as featured on CBS Sunday Morning!'" Janet is also author of BACHELOR FOR SALE (Thorndike Press 2006 - large print) and SWEET ON YOU (Thorndike Press 2006 - large print) http://www.janetwellington.com ************************************************* 6) A GOOD QUESTION Cindy LaFerle has “wrestled for some time with the issue of allowing my writing to be published for free -- or not. The professional writing organizations to which I belong have strongly discouraged the practice of giving away what we can sell. That said, in the past, if the exposure was particularly good, I would justify giving my work away, especially if it was a reprint situation. I should add that in the early days of my freelancing career, I also needed to build a portfolio, and publishing articles for free (or mere pennies) was one quick way to do that." She notes that she has contributed free pieces to a beautiful regional magazine, a free tabloid that survives on advertising, thinking that the exposure would help boost her book sales. “Unfortunately, I have learned that the circulation for this freebie doesn't reach much of my target audience,” she says. “It also occurred to me that giving my work away to some publications --while accepting payment from other publications -- isn't really fair to the publications that DO pay me. I write for several magazines that are distributed for free, and they have always managed to pay me -- sometimes nicely. Out of loyalty to those publications, I have decided not to give my work away again, unless the circumstance for doing so is lucrative in another way.” Cindy wonders if any of you have thoughts on this. She is author of WRITING HOME (Hearth Stone Books 2005). http://www.laferle.com ************************************************* 7) PROGRESS REPORT Following are connections I made that have borne fruit: Walter M. Rather than place this entry in Feedback, I decided to use it as a Feature Article: “I think you are closing the door on a major opportunity,” says Stephanie Chandler. “I also do some freelance writing but quickly realized that I needed to separate my author goals with my paid freelance goals. I write a lot of articles and offer them up for reprint in publications all over the country and this effort has brought tremendous exposure for my books. Instead of being paid in cash, I am paid with a byline -- which is even better than the measly checks I would otherwise receive from some of the smaller publications. I also write the articles on my terms and simply offering them for reprint means that I don't deal with editorial headaches. I get a lot of mileage out of each article since it can be reprinted dozens of times in various publications with little effort, thus expanding my exposure, elevating my expertise, and keeping my name in front of my readers. This practice has also helped me establish relationships with editors who write back and ask to review my book or offer up other opportunities. I was recently asked to write a PAID column for a business magazine as a result of offering up an article reprint for fr~ee. Many publications will still pay because it is their policy. I wouldn't write a custom article for no pay, but I have no problem offering up reprints of the articles I write each week. I have compiled a list of daily and weekly newspapers, business magazines, and other publications and send out articles every week or two with the following format: Article Submission By Stephanie Chandler *Dear Editor, This is one of my top strategies for book promotion and I recommend it to any author who wants to boost their exposure. I understand why serious freelancers wouldn't want to do this but their goals are different. Most are making their living from their articles, not promoting their books. It's a matter of priorities. Another strategy that I use is to publish articles online. I submit articles to many content sites including http://www.ideamarketers.com, http://www.ezinearticles.com, and http://www.articlealley.com. My articles get reprinted in e-zines and on websites all over the world and this effort brings me a TON of website traffic and new customers. It is also an important part of my overall marketing strategy. I hope that Cindy will reconsider her position and that other authors will see that getting your articles out there with a byline is an even better form of payment than a $50 check. The big magazines aren't going to reprint articles for fr~ee so you can spend your time querying those and trying to get paid if that is your goal. But the smaller pubs are exchanging exposure from experts in order to fill their pages and that's just fine by me.” ------------------ Cynthia Brian is a New York Times best selling author of four books. "What has been interesting" comments Cynthia, "is that since I'm a best selling author, more venues expect me to offer my services for free or very low cost. They just assume I am wealthy. I finally had to convince myself that 'no' is a complete sentence. I don't need more exposure - what I need is to be fairly compensated for my expertise and professionalism. With that in mind, in 2006 I am no longer doing anything pro bono unless it benefits the charity I founded, Be the Star You Are! “I charge for writing, coaching, speaking, and of course all my acting. I also have no desire to speak at bookstores since they seem to order a huge amount of books, take months to return unsold ones and even longer to pay for what was sold. Over six months ago I spoke and signed at two bookstores in Utah who have still not paid me for books sold. It's time that bookstores pay up front with no return options, therefore making them accountable for purchasing just what they can sell. “Back of the room, premium, and internet sales are booming. Recently I was approached by a group of plastic surgeons who wanted me to give a keynote presentation to a conference they were arranging. When I asked about honorarium fees and travel expenses, they said they had no budget. I retorted, 'Well, how about a face lift, then?' Their response, 'We don't give away our services.' Fair enough- neither do I! Writers, speakers, and authors are professionals and deserve compensation. What I've discovered in my years in media is like everything else in life-why buy the cow when the milk is free? http://www.star-style.com ------------------------ “Please tell Cindy that selling/trading/giving away articles is totally up to her!” urges Pamela S. Thibodeaux. “I know many authors frown upon giving away articles in lieu of selling them. However, it is getting more and more difficult to place reprints and even originals in paying markets due to the volume of articles they receive. As for feeling guilty for getting paid for an article previously placed for free, DON'T. As long as you are honest that the article is a reprint and give previous pub info, if they want to pay you, then by all means accept! Articles = Publicity & Exposure. In this business, name recognition is a big deal and, if you're like me with a very small promo budget, they are a great way to get your name circling about. I've donated articles as well as personal essays, prayers and devotionals. Personally, I don't have time to research EVERY new avenue out there, submit and wait when those articles can be getting me some attention, feedback, exposure and possibly a sale or 2. I've also had people request a reprint of articles and pay for them even though they know it's a freebie. MHO, do what gets you the MOST exposure! ******************************* 2) GRIST FOR YOUR MILL Thinking of investing? That is, I've been told that I should only market heavily to one faction, because an independent bookseller might feel angry if I also do a signing at a big Borders right down the road. How does one avoid the politics of this (assuming, with great optimism, that several bookstores would be willing to let me do a signing?)” Julia's mystery novel, THE DARK BACKWARD, is being published in May by Midnight Ink. http://www.juliabuckley.com ******************************* 4) CONTESTS Dawn Rivers Baker, editor/publisher of Brighid's Fire Books, contributed the following: Independent publisher, Brighid's Fire Books, celebrates Small Press Month by launching the search for unpublished manuscripts through its fifth Annual Fiction Manuscript Contest. The contest, which is co-sponsored by indie online bookseller LughnassadhBooks.com - http://www.lughnassadhbooks.com - is held each year beginning on March 1st, which is also the beginning of Small Press Month. "The choice to open the contest in March wasn't deliberate but, when we considered the timing with Small Press Month, we thought it worked," says Derek Stafford, owner of LughnassadhBooks.com. "A small independent bookseller and a small independent publisher joining together to celebrate independent publishing by searching for new voices in fiction - not bad, huh?" National Small Press Month is a yearly celebration of independent publishers and the vital role they play in the industry. Co-founded by the Small Press Center and the PMA, The Independent Book Publishers Association, this year marks the tenth anniversary of the event with the theme: "Books Beyond The Obvious." "That's a theme that we can certainly relate to," says Dawn. The Brighid's Fire Books/LughnassadhBooks.com Annual Fiction Manuscript Contest is open to unpublished, book-length fiction, with cash prizes for the top three submissions and the bonus of a publishing contract offer for the first place winner. Brighid's Fire Books specializes in debut fiction and uses the contest as a way to connect with unpublished authors and to find titles for publication. "It's getting more and more difficult for new authors to break into print if they don't want to self-publish," says Ms. Baker. "The contest evens the playing field a bit and helps us find strong first novels that deserve to be brought to the public." Contest details are available online at http://www.brighidsfirebooks.com/contest.html ******************************* 5) PROGRESS REPORT Earle Ziegler was a guest on Jason Merchey's show, America's Values Divide, on Tuesday, February 28, 2006, on World Talk Radio. How did this happen? “A reporter contacted me because my ReelTalk reviews run on their website,” she explains. “I tried to talk her out of it because I don't like to do TV, especially in the studio. She said 'no problem' -- and this morning she and a camera man came out to the house and set up shop in my office, which is filled with movie memorabilia. It was live programming and fed back to the station in six segments (to cover the acting, director and best picture categories).” Betty Jo adds - “A banner day here! It was so neat to convene with Stephen for a moment in time to know there are like-minded people out there doing such amazing things. It is so inspiring!
