Screenwriting Advice Article!

You are the Box Office Smash: The Personal Screenplay
by Gordy Hoffman

Right this very second, in the heart of every struggling, undiscovered screenwriter, in the dark, hidden corner deep within, there is a voice, a clear whisper, saying one thing:

You're never gonna figure this out.

And this is not referring to the story with its gaping hole, the finale missing a payoff, the hit and miss humor, the flat title.

I'm talking about freedom. The freedom to work as a screenwriter. Compensation for a home for family and a life. The resources to wake up and ply your craft and pay the freight, without obstacle. The chance to see your writing made into pictures, to work with the industry's best, to fulfill this goal of professional screenwriter. Hollywood success.

Behind this voice is the idea that somehow, some way, you'll find the hero, or the hook, logline or pitch that will punch your golden ticket. If you could only figure out what the studio wants, if you can only get a solid bead to this game, you know you can write and execute. What is the script I should write to get an agent? What is the one that will sell? It's not that I don't know how to write, I know how to write screenplays, I just need to know what they want, even though I think I know what they want, but I don't think I have the idea that they want. Yeah.

I'm not gonna figure this out, whispers the voice.

Why this uneasiness? Does it originate within ourselves? I don't think so. But where does it come from? The daily obsession with box office grosses? The news of the seven figure deals to newbies? The endless procession of boneheadedly conceived franchises-in-waiting arriving in the theatres every Friday? People winning Academy Awards for movies you would not be caught dead writing? Recognizing an idea you came up with years ago on your couch, produced with a $130 million budget drowning in CGI?

All these things are but a few of the possible reasons why this seeds unhealthy doubt and confusion in the modern screenwriter. Tracking these forces outside us and beyond our control in an effort to trudge the path to a successful screenwriting career will prove to most to be unproductive and corrosive. Basically, trying to figure out what Hollywood wants will land us in a resentment that makes "giving up" a sane response to the very challenge which used to inspire us. In short, we cannot chase a perceived trend and remember our dreams.

You cannot look at the marketplace and find your voice. You can find ideas, trends, and inspiration there, perhaps, but you can find these things driving in traffic as well. But listening to your voice is the key to creating original, compelling stories.

Your life is your own story. You have a completely unique thread of experience. By allowing yourself to express these emotional experiences, your screenplay, your story, will be different from any other and powerful, as original as your fingerprint.

Why is it powerful? When we have the courage to be specific about what we know about living, we create an authentic world an audience recognizes as the life they are living on planet Earth. This connects your audience to your story. This connection is the foundation of the phenomena of story.

Why does story mean so much to us? We recognize the triumphs and tragedies of our lives, with all the hilarity and tears. By seeing it, we are validated and it underscores meaning and purpose to living.

If we don't use what we've collected in life in our hearts and spirits, then our story loses its authenticity and the connection the audience should make fails. They do not see themselves, and when they leave the theater, they do not call their friends. When people do not call their friends after seeing a movie, the movie bombs.

When a writer opens their person to their work, when they allow themselves to be vulnerable, to risk exposure of the secrets of their life story, they take a huge step towards creating a screenplay of substantial value, a screenplay with a greater potential of a large number of tickets sold.

This is precisely why art and commerce have remained bedfellows for thousands of years. To look at the relationship between art and commerce as adversarial or incompatible is just plain foolish. Art happens when people invest their spirits in their work without fear, and story is artful when the writing is truthful and the writer is authentic.

And what do we have to be honest about? We can only lie about what we know, and we can only tell the truth about what we know. And that is what has happened to us, our life story. This is what we share.

This is not a pitch to write "what you know." This is not about writing stories about where you work or where you live. This is about writing about what you felt. You can imagine characters and worlds and actions and speech you've never personally experienced, but if you remember to infuse your choices with your emotional and spiritual struggles and victories as a human being, your screenplay will be different in the very best sense of the word.

The question you have to answer is not what does Hollywood want today. The question is how honest of a writer do you want to be. I guarantee you can write a blockbuster, you can write a box office hit. This will happen when you find an audience. And the correct path to this crowd of people is listening to yourself. If you practice, you will develop an inner ear for who you are and what you know and you will become masterful in loading your work with your fingerprints. Writing is personal work. You are the guitar. You are the box of paint. Give of that and your audience will remember why life is good and they will talk of you.

Your 'Just Do It' Appointment
By Andrea Campbell

Researching markets, ugh.
Checking statistics, ugh.
Finding agents, ugh.
Noting preferences, ugh.
Writing queries, ugh.
Not selling, argh.

These are the steps that so many writers hope to escape, skip over or avoid. But if you are dodging these tasks, then you're not selling. You may be bitching to anyone who will listen but you're not selling. “It's a bad market,” you say; “I missed the window,” you whine, or, “I can't find an agent who understands my book” and so on, ad nauseum.

Apathy reigns
I've been teaching e-courses online for a long time and there is one thing that writers fail at consistently, and that is marketing. They will spend years slogging through how-to-write books, taking great pains designing characters or nonfiction topics, laboring over craft, attending conferences, but when it comes to selling, their brains stop.

These are often very talented individuals who claim they love writing but they cannot wrap their minds around the fact that they have to do a market study and write to find their message. It's like they get amnesia and can no longer remember what it is they're supposed to do after the book or the article. And you know why? Because it's a pain in the ass. (And they could save themselves a lot of heartache by knowing what to do before writing too, but that's a subject of a different stripe and begins with my other e-class.)

Marketing is hard
For many decades, people have gotten the impression that writing is creative. It needs a muse, deep thought, unusual ideas. Writers like to hear the words: nurture, talent, inspiration, and passion. What they don't want to hear is that they didn't do the right marketing, that their synopsis says nothing, that their agent query missed the mark. They don't want to separate themselves from this sleek little phraseology that: writers 'don't need no stinking' marketing. They want to believe that sales happen as if some divine influence will fly down from editor heaven and discover their work, simply because they like to talk about it. But are they saying the right words?

The right words
People are getting published. And some of the books that are on the market are not earthshaking, stunning, or breathless prose. They're just stories, or just how-tos, or just semi-interesting topics. So what's wrong with you and your writing? Like anything else, you're not doing your complete homework. And until you start asking yourself: “What are the right words? What is the best approach? Did I do a market test? Is my audience definable and do I recognize their needs? Do I know who publishes my type of book? Am I understanding what this agent wants? Can I explain my book the way it needs to be told? Have I really analyzed the competition? Have I approached this as a business?

Local schmoozing
I spoke to a local writers group in my community this past September, (it's ironic too, because I founded the group in 1990). My topic was something they requested I speak on-and that was: how to get an agent. So, in preparation for the luncheon, I asked some basic questions: what are we having for lunch? No, ah, sorry, I asked if they could each e-mail me a query that they were currently working on or sending out. Thrilled at the prospect, I got quite a few samples.

The results
Two of the samples were not written as business letters. One person could not describe their book at all. Two other folks used generic examples instead of specifics. One was too scant, the other too long. One person did not have credentials. Most all of them had a case of “wills'-“my book will….” Several of them did not reiterate their product name. And the writing was either poor or boring on most of them. Worst part of it, I had to tell these people my results! (I did cushion the blows with tricks of my own; I'm not heartless for heaven's sake.) But the point here is that you might not be different from these other writers, who may be very good in their own right (sorry for the pun).

Read carefully
If you pay attention to this article and read through it with a highlighter, you will be much further along toward solving the marketing puzzle. And for some, it will always be a puzzle because they don't want to sit down and match up the colors, find the right shapes, or look for the pieces that make up the frame; their puzzle will always be unfinished, languishing. So you know what you must do: look for the clues and just do it. Make an appointment to just do it.

A few more stories are needed for the sequel to the very popular book, The Simple Touch of Fate. Stories must be true and talk about how being at the right place at the right time, or not being at the wrong place at the wrong time, had a profound effect on your life, or the life of someone you know. The word limit is 2,000 and the deadline is August 1. We cannot use any more stories about death or how you met your mate. Please send stories to Brenda Warneka at brendawarneka@yahoo.com

INTRODUCTION

My publisher, McFarland & Co., selected a title based on my suggestions and I emailed all the contributors with the good news. Many of the hosts felt they wanted to reciprocate for putting them in the book and invited me on their shows -

On June 16, 2008 I was a guest on a sports show with Mike Davis, aka Coach Mike, host of Kidz "n" Sports on 1680 AM KDSV, Whittier, CA http://www.AdrenalineRadio.com. To listen, go to http://www.adrenalineradio.com/podcast and scroll down to show's name and click. My interview starts five minutes after Mike's introduction; on June 26, 2008 a spiritual show, Going Global with Eileen Ireland on BBS Radio, http://www.bbsradio.com, and on June 30, 2008, a business show, Where Wall Street Meets Main Street, with Jack Wartkenthian on KTEK in Houston and KJSA in Dallas/Fort Worth, TX http://www.bizradio.com.

On July 18, 2008, at 3 p.m., (ET) I will be the guest of Dot Blum on Bright Spot, a show focusing on the positive, on AM 1620, Sandy Springs, Ga., http://www.radiosandysprings.com. It's hard to place her show so I put it under "Multiple and Miscellaneous" in my book.

The book title is Talk Radio Wants You - An Intimate Guide to 700 Shows and How to Get Invited

The kindness of these hosts had me thinking of the adage - Do Unto Others - and if we promoted our books that way - offering something to others - we might get back more than we bargained for. It helps to have connections, of course. As subscriber and Atlanta resident Peter Bowerman, writes in his book, The Well-Fed Writer: Back For Seconds (Fanove Publishing 2005), "I had a connection with the local Advertising Federation Club and helped them out with some freebie stuff. I was happily surprised when they paid for me to attend the District Conference and I'll be the Program Chair on the Ad Fed Board starting in several months. We only have about seven ad agencies in town, but they're all part of the club and I've been able to make good connections at each."

Consider the Anthology
By Cindy La Ferle

I often remind my writing workshop students that anthologies are excellent (and often overlooked) markets for writers of short fiction, poetry, and short personal essays. Specializing in inspirational essays on home and family topics, I've had my pieces published in a wide variety of anthologies, including Chicken Soup for the Soul, Guideposts publications, Literary Mama, and more. While payment is rarely much higher than $200 per piece, anthologies are impressive additions to a writer's resume. Better yet, they introduce your writing to a new readership with a special interest in your topic or area of specialty.

A few essays from my own collection, Writing Home, have been included in anthologies -- another boost for my book sales. Anthologies typically include each contributor's biographical information, publishing credits, and website, making it easy for readers -- or editors -- to contact you or buy your books. For example, I was contacted by a national radio host who read one of my pieces in a popular anthology. That led to an interview, and more books sales for Writing Home.

Editors of forthcoming anthologies often list calls for submissions in writers' magazines and online. Try Googling "anthologies" and you'll be surprised at how many leads you'll find. Sites such as AnthologiesOnline.com list a variety of anthology opportunities. And seek out anthologies at bookstores and libraries, always with an eye on a good match for your work. Your local librarian is a good resource for the latest titles.
