![]() by: Jay Johnson In my research of self-published authors I have found two key answers. One lacks the confidence to 'invest' in selling their book (i.e., instead relying on the Amazon/B&N type operations); and the other does not understand the need to 'invest' their time in promoting the book they often were DRIVEN to write. FIRST, Lack of Confidence: This is almost always a result of a failure to address the dollar side of the 'investment' (see downloads for my article written for Boaze Publishing). It's all about ROI (Return On Investment) and what most authors fail to take into consideration. SECOND, A Failure to Promote: In today's 'highly visual' culture books do NOT sell just because you've rendered a good story. YOU must promote your book at every opportunity, whether you are a full or part time author. ALWAYS have copies of your book on hand, ALWAYS tell whomever you encounter that you'd like for them to 'buy' your book and ALWAYS advertise. Otherwise don't publish a book...write a journal - it's cheaper and far less stressful. SOLUTIONS? #1. BE FEARLESS! If need be, take on the courage of one of the many characters about whom you've written. #2. Be realistic with your advertising budget and seek competent help. #3. View the endeavor as a long range objective and then act accordingly, i.e., book purchases, ad budget, ROI and how to get competent help. If you follow these simple rules you will have a more enjoyable 'author experience' and NEVER regret your choices. Let me hear from you and about your experiences - good or bad.
