Jay ISSN 1545-5599 BOOK PROMOTION NEWSLETTER Issue 74: January 4, 2006 EDITOR: FRANCINE SILVERMAN http://www.bookpromotionnewsletter.com http://www.nystatetravel.com Issued every other Wednesday since 2003 In This Issue 1) Promotional Coups 2) A Good Question 3) Wonderful websites 4) Progress Report 5) Kudos 6) Correction INTRODUCTION The holidays are over and I hope your New Year's resolution includes sending me your bios. Even if you're not part of my publicity team, I have a signature line under every Expert Sheet directing the reader to the expert bios on my website. You never know when a member of the media might spot a bio that would add to a good story. All your publicity and marketing should not only list your web address, but also provide at least one specific reason to visit…I did a radio interview in Kansas City about my book on Frugal Fun. I always give reasons to visit the site, such as 'I mention a number of great cheap airfare sites in back issues of my Frugal Fun Tips. You'll find them on the archives page at www.frugalfun.com in the travel section.' A listener heard the interview, went to the site, ordered both the fun book and one of the marketing books, and then hired me for quite a bit of copywriting.” http://www.principledprofit.com http://www.frugalmarketing.com Self-published authors sometimes CAN get their books into the mega-bookstores! Arlene Graham (Judy Wiedhopf) is author of TO WALK AMONG THE STONES (Whimrose Press 2002). In 2004, she “heard about a local book group that met at a local chain bookstore: Barnes & Noble,” she says. “I went to one meeting, liked what I saw, and came back the next week and presented the facilitator with a copy of To Walk Among the Stones and my sales material. I offered to speak at one of the meetings about the writing process. She not only allowed me to, but I ended up being scheduled to speak at other bookstores as well: Borders, and my local community center: Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center. Because of this, my novel is on the shelf at my local bookstores.” MARCHING THROUGH CULPEPER (Edgehill Books 2000) by Virginia Morton, now in its sixth printing, is a Civil War novel that weaves both historical and fictional characters. She shares a “story that proves perseverance works”: Several years ago, she sent a copy to Pat Robertson, founder of the Christian Broadcasting Network, who had spent his childhood summers in Culpeper visiting relatives. “He would appreciate the history and the Christian characters in the book,” Virginia figured. “He sent me a thank-you note at the time and that was the end of it. However, I've been getting very positive feedback from Christian readers and I feel the book could be a crossover in the Christian fiction market. So I began praying and contemplating ways to reach that market as I felt I needed an endorsement. “The answer that came back was: go to the filming of the '700 Club.' Since my husband had a judge's conference in Virginia Beach, this was certainly possible. And so I went and while waiting to go into the studio I bought one of Robertson's books. The receptionist suggested I get him to sign it after the show and she sat me up front where I could grab him before he left. And so I did, and, as he was signing my book, I introduced myself and told him I'd sent him a copy of MTC several years ago. He looked up and smiled and then told me he had read my book and how much he enjoyed it and praised my meticulous research. I was elated. Next I sent him a letter requesting a quote. It took five weeks, but I finally received this quote: 'I thoroughly enjoyed Marching Through Culpeper. This meticulously researched novel upholds Christian values and offers inspiring Christian characters - both real and fictional.'” http://www.edgehillbooks.com Please consider adding http://www.AuthorsandExperts.com and http://www.SchoolBookings.com to your list of resources. She wrote that when she Googles her name, the first thing that pops up is her bio from my website. Though I tried it with the names of other authors and my site did not appear, we hope that the media will discover your bios at my website. “If the purpose of these listings is to solicit media interviews and reviews,” says Tricia, “it would help to include a brief bulleted list of what each author can discuss. That's what I would look for when I booked radio show guests.” Tricia is author of Divine Wisdom at Work™ 10 Universal Principles for Enlightened Entrepreneurs (Aha! House 2006), the first in a series of books. http://www.divinewisdomatwork.com So please send me the topics you are comfortable writing or speaking about. Be clear if it's both “writing” and “speaking.” I will put a box at the end of your bio. It can be a bulleted list such as Tricia's: · Tap into Divine Wisdom using five simple strategies (meditation, intuition, “God Winks,” dreams and prayer) · Define your life purpose and make it your life's work · Increase prosperity in all aspects of your business · Engage the Law of Attraction by using your thoughts to create your reality · Visualize and affirm success · Cultivate an attitude of gratitude for a lifetime of blessings or a list like Judith Sherven and Jim Sniechowski's: Judith & Jim are experts in the following areas: Relationships Weddings Proposals and Engagements Honeymoons Dating and Singles Marriage Conflict Romance Workplace Relationships In This Issue: 1) Promotional Coups 2) Wonderful Websites 3) Feedback 4) Grist for Your Mill 5) Progress Report 6) Kudos 1) PROMOTIONAL COUPS You'll never know who's in your corner - if you don't ask. "After finishing my book about surviving the death of a child, "I Have No Intention of Saying Good-bye (iUniverse 2001)," I happened to go to a book and author luncheon in my hometown," says Sandy Fox. "One of the speaking authors was Stephen Cannell, best-selling author and TV writer. I had heard from a friend that she had read that he had lost a child a few years back in an accident on the Los Angeles beach. My friend said, "Ask him if he'll read a proof of your book and write a blurb for the cover." I thought it an excellent idea and so went up to him while he was signing books, told him my story and asked if he would read it. “He was very kind and said I should send him the proof (to his home in L.A.!) and gave me the address. A few months passed, I had not heard anything, and I was almost finished editing the book. I had a few blurbs for the cover from a national SADD person and a psychologist that dealt with grief counseling, but still hoped I'd hear from Mr. Cannell. “Finally, he did send me a quote, which now appears prominently on my bookcover and reads, 'As a father who has lost a child, I know about the journey through grief. Sandy Fox has written a wonderful book about the way we heal. This is must reading for anyone who has lost a child, for therapists or for anyone guiding others through the pain of healing.' “I was absolutely thrilled, sent him the first copy off the press and will always remember and appreciate what he did for me and my book. It is now in its second edition. By the way, I also sent a copy to Danielle Steel, who also lost a child and wrote about it, and received a lovely personal note from her.” http://www.sandyfoxauthor.com 2) WONDERFUL WEBSITES Brady Magazine is seeking articles on writing. Visit http://www.bradymagazine.com and click “The Written Word” for the various genres. Krissy Brady, editor-in-chief, explains that the database is “quite sparse at the moment, since we recently redesigned our website and decided to start with completely fresh content. I am looking to bulk up the directory though in 2006.” She sent me the submission guidelines. If anyone wants them, let me know. Dr. Dorree Lynn accepts brief articles on any subject geared toward the older population at http://www.fiftyandfurthermore.com If you are at retirement age and still working, Looking Forward would like stories from you. See details at its site: http://www.lookingforward2.com 3) FEEDBACK Two subscribers responded to the promotional coup by Arlene Graham about how she got her self-published book into Barnes & Noble: Christine Hohlbaum, an American living in Germany, writes, "I loved what Arlene Graham wrote about how she got her book into her local bookstores. "I recently approached a salesclerk at an English bookshop owned by a large chain store (similar to Borders) in Germany. Thinking I had nothing to lose (since my book has been proven to be unavailable for order in most, smaller bookstores) I asked her who her distributor was. She told me and I was floored. Baker & Taylor? I shrieked. I almost clamoured to her sleeve, but remembered my manners at the last-minute. Since I was doing a keynote speech in a few weeks, I led with this sentence: 'I'd love to send customers to your store in a few weeks when I give my keynote speech at the American-German Business Club." "She then ordered five copies of my latest book, SAHM I Am: TALES OF A STAY-AT-HOME MOM IN EUROPE (Wyatt-MacKenzie Publishing 2005). "'Out of curiosity, do you have my first book in your system, too?' Lo and behold! She did! So without my asking her, she ordered five copies of DIARY OF A MOTHER (iUniverse 2003), too. "A few weeks later several people bought my books from her store. And you know? She remembered me and told them about my approaching her!" http://diaryofamother.com http://SAHMIAM.com Cindy LaFerle writes, "Great tip on getting into the mega chains from Arlene Graham! "Another tip along the same lines: I was able to establish a mutually happy relationship with my local Borders store by calling the store manager and telling him that I send my writing students to his store on a regular basis. Since I teach classes in memoir writing/personal essays -- and use my own book, among others, as a teaching tool -- my students are always going to the local bookstores in search of items on my reading list. (We have several mega bookstore chains competing in this area!) Borders staffers are now familiar with my book, and always call to reorder when stock is depleted. "So .... if any of your authors out there teach classes on a regular basis, either through the school system or local community centers, they should make their local booksellers aware of the business they sending their way. It's always a great idea to make friends with these people. I have found them to be amazingly helpful to local or regional writers." Cindy is author of WRITING HOME (Hearth Stone Books 2005), a compilation of her newspaper columns from 1992 to 2004. http://www.laferle.com 4) GRIST FOR YOUR MILL Christine Hohlbaum contributed this call for submissions: Acts of kindness are often overlooked. To celebrate the little things that people do in life, I am collecting real-life stories for a book on kindness (Spring 2007, Wyatt-MacKenzie Publishing). If you have a story to tell, I'd like to hear it. Maybe it's about how you picked flowers for a sick neighbor just to make his day. Or someone fed your parking meter during your lunch hour so you wouldn't get a ticket. I am particularly interested in how your life changed after the act of kindness occurred. What happened ? Who was involved ? How did it come to be ? Did you notice a change in your life after being the recipient or offering an act of kindness? Were others around you kinder? Were you kinder? Were you more joyous? Generous? All appropriate stories will be considered. Please forward your story and full contact info (full name, address, email, etc.) to me, Christine Louise Hohlbaum, at storyofkindness@yahoo.com Thank you! Norm Goldman emailed me these links to his interviews he did with subscribers Fern Reiss and Carol Adler, president of Dandelion Books, since he felt both provide “great tips for writers and authors.” http://www.bookpleasures.com/Lore2/idx/0/1839/article/ Fern_Reiss_Guru_On_How_To_Publish_Your_Book_is_Interviewed.html?pt_sid=8d2c743e6f74d29d561fdc12f3a771d4 http://www.bookpleasures.com/Lore2/idx/0/1853/article/ Carol_Adler_Poet_Author_Businesswoman_and_Teacher_Interviewed.html?pt_sid=4a307fb2ec07bfcad4211c4c5e9d6a55 Charles Boyle of Trident Publishing contributed the following, and he requests that each one of you tell a grade school teacher about this no-cost offer: I offer teachers my entire children's picture book online, free, at http://www.taileywhaley.com It's an action story of being "different." We all know that if you're different, you get picked on. Teachers know just how to use Tailey Whaley to discourage bullying and encourage kindness toward those among us who are "different." The book is distributed via Baker&Taylor and sells at b&n.com and amazon.com (see its 5 star ratings). Also, it got a sterling review from MidWest Reviews. Tailey Whaley is about to go into its 3rd printing of 5K each time. Steve Manchester has been offered the position of Acquisitions Editor for Sunpiper Media Publishing (http://www.sunpipermedia.com) a new traditional publishing house that expects to release 10 new titles each year. Feel free to send Steve your query letters and book synopses to smanchester@sunpipermedia.com or info@stevenmanchester.com http://www.StevenManchester.com Meredith Hamilton contributed the following: “'Between the Lines' is a new monthly ezine published by The Editorial Department, a full-service book publishing company. It is looking for interesting authors and publishers to interview, and it also accepts articles on several aspects of publishing. (Jan points out: "It's NOT a diet book but a book to inspire and motivate. My forthcoming book, TIME TO LOSE, is my unique approach to the weight and exercise challenge. It advocates developing a new relationship with food and shows readers how.") Jan welcomes hearing from subscribers who want to fill out her confidential weight history survey. Your responses could be used anonymously. Or, alternatively, if you do want to be considered for being quoted by name -- first, first and last, with the title of your book cited so it could be a publicity opportunity -- let Jan know that as well. You would NOT be quoted by name unless Jan gets back to you and lets you know what quote, if any, she would be using. Send Jan an e-mail at jyager@aol.com and she'll e-mail you her survey. (For more about Jan's credentials, go to: http://www.drjanyager.com My friend, Joyce, a professor and Phd candidate at Columbia University, contributed this release. Because of financial restraints, the competition is only open to Americans: Civic Ventures, a nonprofit think tank, has announced that nominations are open for the Purpose Prize, five $100,000 investments in Americans over the age of sixty who are combining their passion, creativity, experience, and entrepreneurial skills to tackle issues of social significance. The program will also honor sixty semi-finalists ("60 at 60+") for their social innovations. The winners will be effective and action-oriented innovators who have launched this work after their 50th birthday. They may be working in nonprofits, government, or for-profit organizations devoted to tackling difficult social challenges, including homelessness, social justice and human rights, violence, poverty and hunger, health, education, and the environment. To be eligible for the prize, the nominee must be at least 60 years old, a U.S. resident, and currently working in a leadership capacity in an organization or institution (public, private, nonprofit, or for-profit) to address a major social problem. Nominees will be informed in March 2006 if they have been selected as semi-finalists for the prize. The five winners will be announced in June at the national Experience Leadership Summit. In addition to the $100,000 cash prize, winners will receive substantive assistance in developing their personal and organizational capacity to move their work to the next level. They will also be eligible to apply for additional financial support from the program's new Fund for Innovation. Self-nominations are accepted. http://www.civilventures.org Sigrid MacDonald would like to form group to recommend other books to their library. “Let's say that there are 10 of us who volunteer,” says Sigrid. “Each person would agree to ask his or her library to order books from the other nine people on the list. That way each of us would have our book mentioned to at least nine other libraries; maybe only two or three libraries will purchase the book. As the program evolves, we could have 30 or 40 participants and each one would continue asking their library to buy different books. “At some point, the library might get overwhelmed with too many requests from one person. In that case, the volunteer might ask his or her friends or family members to do it. Just a thought but I think that it could be successful because libraries want to buy books that are recommended from people in their OWN community.” Sigrid recommended Book Marketing from A-Z to her library in Canada and it purchased a copy. “I've been asking my library to buy books for the last 10 years and they buy about 85 -- 90% of them including ALL of the recent titles of the self-published artists I know,” she explains. “That's because libraries are much more likely to purchase items on behalf of their patrons than they are to respond to unsolicited mail by unknown authors.” Contact Sigrid at sigridmac@rogers.com if you are interested in participating. 5) PROGRESS REPORT To those of you who have inquired about my progress, I can only say that I am trying as hard as I can to get you publicity. It's an ongoing process, but I'm confident that I will get everyone of my 30+ clients placement. Since the last issue, I have received emails from columnists and radio hosts promising a follow-up. Here are the actual successes thus far: Aliza Silverman, host of Single Talk, has scheduled Jan Yager to talk about her book, 125 WAYS TO MEET THE LOVE OF YOUR LIFE (Hannacroix Creek Books 2004) on February 18, at 4 p.m., EST for two segments, 15 minutes each. http://www.drjanyager.com....... Linda mailed me a tearsheet and I couldn't have more thrilled had it been me. Unbeknownst to Linda, her book editor had arranged to have her second book, MENAGERIE AT THE MANGER (The Editorial Annex 2005), reviewed in the Christmas Day edition by reviewer Dennie Hall.
