Screenwriting Advice Article!

You are the Box Office Smash: The Personal Screenplay
by Gordy Hoffman

Right this very second, in the heart of every struggling, undiscovered screenwriter, in the dark, hidden corner deep within, there is a voice, a clear whisper, saying one thing:

You're never gonna figure this out.

And this is not referring to the story with its gaping hole, the finale missing a payoff, the hit and miss humor, the flat title.

I'm talking about freedom. The freedom to work as a screenwriter. Compensation for a home for family and a life. The resources to wake up and ply your craft and pay the freight, without obstacle. The chance to see your writing made into pictures, to work with the industry's best, to fulfill this goal of professional screenwriter. Hollywood success.

Behind this voice is the idea that somehow, some way, you'll find the hero, or the hook, logline or pitch that will punch your golden ticket. If you could only figure out what the studio wants, if you can only get a solid bead to this game, you know you can write and execute. What is the script I should write to get an agent? What is the one that will sell? It's not that I don't know how to write, I know how to write screenplays, I just need to know what they want, even though I think I know what they want, but I don't think I have the idea that they want. Yeah.

I'm not gonna figure this out, whispers the voice.

Why this uneasiness? Does it originate within ourselves? I don't think so. But where does it come from? The daily obsession with box office grosses? The news of the seven figure deals to newbies? The endless procession of boneheadedly conceived franchises-in-waiting arriving in the theatres every Friday? People winning Academy Awards for movies you would not be caught dead writing? Recognizing an idea you came up with years ago on your couch, produced with a $130 million budget drowning in CGI?

All these things are but a few of the possible reasons why this seeds unhealthy doubt and confusion in the modern screenwriter. Tracking these forces outside us and beyond our control in an effort to trudge the path to a successful screenwriting career will prove to most to be unproductive and corrosive. Basically, trying to figure out what Hollywood wants will land us in a resentment that makes "giving up" a sane response to the very challenge which used to inspire us. In short, we cannot chase a perceived trend and remember our dreams.

You cannot look at the marketplace and find your voice. You can find ideas, trends, and inspiration there, perhaps, but you can find these things driving in traffic as well. But listening to your voice is the key to creating original, compelling stories.

Your life is your own story. You have a completely unique thread of experience. By allowing yourself to express these emotional experiences, your screenplay, your story, will be different from any other and powerful, as original as your fingerprint.

Why is it powerful? When we have the courage to be specific about what we know about living, we create an authentic world an audience recognizes as the life they are living on planet Earth. This connects your audience to your story. This connection is the foundation of the phenomena of story.

Why does story mean so much to us? We recognize the triumphs and tragedies of our lives, with all the hilarity and tears. By seeing it, we are validated and it underscores meaning and purpose to living.

If we don't use what we've collected in life in our hearts and spirits, then our story loses its authenticity and the connection the audience should make fails. They do not see themselves, and when they leave the theater, they do not call their friends. When people do not call their friends after seeing a movie, the movie bombs.

When a writer opens their person to their work, when they allow themselves to be vulnerable, to risk exposure of the secrets of their life story, they take a huge step towards creating a screenplay of substantial value, a screenplay with a greater potential of a large number of tickets sold.

This is precisely why art and commerce have remained bedfellows for thousands of years. To look at the relationship between art and commerce as adversarial or incompatible is just plain foolish. Art happens when people invest their spirits in their work without fear, and story is artful when the writing is truthful and the writer is authentic.

And what do we have to be honest about? We can only lie about what we know, and we can only tell the truth about what we know. And that is what has happened to us, our life story. This is what we share.

This is not a pitch to write "what you know." This is not about writing stories about where you work or where you live. This is about writing about what you felt. You can imagine characters and worlds and actions and speech you've never personally experienced, but if you remember to infuse your choices with your emotional and spiritual struggles and victories as a human being, your screenplay will be different in the very best sense of the word.

The question you have to answer is not what does Hollywood want today. The question is how honest of a writer do you want to be. I guarantee you can write a blockbuster, you can write a box office hit. This will happen when you find an audience. And the correct path to this crowd of people is listening to yourself. If you practice, you will develop an inner ear for who you are and what you know and you will become masterful in loading your work with your fingerprints. Writing is personal work. You are the guitar. You are the box of paint. Give of that and your audience will remember why life is good and they will talk of you.

How to Write a GREAT Direct Response Letter
By Frankie Picasso

Learn the structure of writing a good Direct Response letter and you are well on your way to building your "list" and selling your products and services. There is some debate as to whether this is a Craft or a Science and this is something we can leave up to the experts, but for our purposes, what matters is that there are important ingredients that must be present in order to write a good Sales letter.
Like any good process there is a Principle. This one has a name and her name is AIDA.

AIDA stands for:
Attention, Interest, Desire, Action.
The first element of a great sales letter is to capture the attention of the reader. This is done in the Headline or title. This one piece of the letter is so important that you can actually purchase headlines or "swipe files" as they are known. If you can arouse curiosity and get the customer to read some more, then the headline has done its job.

Next is the element of Interest. The interest is written into the body of the letter using appropriate copy. Copy is just the text or words that you choose to use. The interest is generally attained by using case studies, examples, history and testimonials, in other words using persuasion by showing proof.

Desire is achieved by showing the BENEFITS of your product or service and what it can do for the customer.
Lastly is Action- this is where there is a call to Action. This is where you ask your reader to give their name or join or purchase the product or service.

There are three more elements that are known to be successful as well.
One is the Post Script or P.S. This has sometimes been so successful that a 30 or 40% conversion rate has been attributed to this element alone.

The Guarantee -- this is not necessary, however, if you can take away any reason that a customer shouldn't do business with you, it can't hurt.

There is one more element that you can add and it is called Inducement. This is an 'offer you can't refuse' kind of offer. It may be that if they sign up right now they will receive something of value and it is usually time sensitive in nature.
There are also ways of tracking to see where in the letter you have captured your target. This can be done using tracking devices. You can get these from http://www.Hotscripts.com or any link tracking on google.

Why not start with these ingredients, tweak it over time and most of all, write from your heart.

(2) PROMOTIONAL COUPS

"Before I even had a publisher or an agent, a woman who was helping me edit my manuscript encouraged me to ask for endorsements," says Julie Genovese, referring to her forthcoming book, Nothing Short of Joy, which has a launch date of March 15th through Behler Publications, and is about being a dwarf, going from feeling like a "freak," enduring multiple operations, to realizing that her greatest handicap existed in her attitude and beliefs.

"Since I am a first time author with no writing credentials, she thought it would give my manuscript some credibility," she continues. "So I wrote a letter (short but right-to-the-point) to 15 of my favorite authors (in my genre.) I told them, in a sentence or two, why I admired them, I wrote a little bit about my book and asked if they'd offer an endorsement. Five out of 15 said yes and Wayne Dyer was one of them! Christiane Northrup, Bernie Siegel, Caroline Myss and Alan Cohen were the other four. It was wonderful!" [All of them endorsed her book, except Caroline Myss, who was on tour at the time].

Wayne Dyer then invited her to his Boston Excuses Begone event to promote her book and you can watch her touching two minute clip on stage with him. "What a thrill," says Julie.

"I went about getting distributed with Ingram Book Company, Barnes and Noble Books, DeVorss Book Company, Alibris Books, Amazon and notifying my full email database and wrote my own promotional press letters," says Daya Devi-Doolin, whose latest book is The Only Way Out Is In: The Secrets of the 14 Realms to Love, Happiness and Success! (Padaran Publications 2009). "I had PRWeb and TransWorldNews do my press releases when they were offering free presses for first time users. I studied and figuratively speaking, 'ate the book' How to Publish, Promote and Sell your Own Book by Robert Lawrence Holt. That's what I've used as guidance on physical realm even to this day and Guidance from my Spiritual Guides on the invisible realm."

Daya also formed her own company, "wrote to the Library of Congress about wanting the LCC number after my business was set up, notification put in the newspaper legal section, opened a checking bank account with DBA (doing business as), business cards, letterhead/envelopes. I followed the suggestions of how to block out my chapters but did it my own way with my own ideas, wrote to distributors, had my notice of my book sent to R.R.Bowker to be included in Books in Print, and just followed each chapter and applied his knowledge to my work." http://www.padaran.com

(5) FROM THE PEN OF........

Which will I brand - my book or myself? If you can truthfully say that there isn't another book in the marketplace that is like yours, or that yours is clearly the best book of its kind in current circulation, the decision goes to the book. But if this isn't absolutely true for you, don't give up hope. See what there is in you that is clearly different from, better than, or perceptually superior to every other author writing on the subject or in your genre if you write fiction. Perhaps this choice is the way you should go anyway, since once your book is published it can't change readily, whereas you can change directions or emphasis, self-investment or self-image rather quickly.

Employment consultant Joe Turner wrote a book, Job Search Secrets Unlocked, aimed at people searching for a job or a job change in today's uncertain economy. Well, so did lots of other people. Although the book was not clearly superior to any other book in the field, Joe had lots of experience as an employment counselor and an increasing facility with using the Internet as a marketing tool. So Joe Turner decided to become "The Job Search Guy" and to focus his branding effort on the Internet. He built a series of Web sites, created an e-book from the print book, made CDs available, then, when the economy really began to fall apart, he wrote a second book on exactly the same subject, which he titled Paycheck 911.

At first sales were slow, but as a part of his promotional mix he also dissected his book and wrote articles on various aspects of job searching. Soon he was being published in many widely read blogs and on major employment web sites, always insisting that his work carry the identification "By Joe Turner, the Job Search Guy," (and, of course, a reference to one of his web sites). His name started to become famliiar in employment circles and book sales began to rise. Today, "Joe Turner, the Job Search Guy" is a known quantity, a sales success, and a "brand" that is respected by people looking for jobs all over America.

Five Things to Avoid for a Pristine Query Letter
by Carolyn Howard-Johnson

We are selling our work when we approach any gatekeeper, an editor, an agent, a contest judge. Here are five little things to avoid so you'll look like the professional you are.

Don't tell the gatekeeper you always wanted to write. You can think of something more pertinent to your cause (and something more original!) than that.

Don't use the verb "quote" when you want the noun "quotation." Some stylebooks will tell you that it's OK, but agents can be a picky lot. Use zero-tolerance grammar rules for your queries.

Don't pitch more than one book at a time. You want to give that one your best shot.

Don't call your novel a "fictional novel." By definition, a novel is fiction.

Don't overdo exclamation marks, question marks, the use of sentence fragments. (Yes, fragments are acceptable when they're used for a good reason.).

Here's one last suggestion for fiction writers 'cause they're so often neglected when it comes to marketing. Avoid using italics for internal thought. Yes, it's being done more and more but it is often a crutch that fiction writers use to avoid writing great transitions and point-of-view; the best agents will recognize it as such.

The online conference will run from February 26 to March 5, 2010 and is sponsored by the Catholic Writer’s Guild. It is free and open to writers of all levels who register between October 1, 2009 and February 15, 2010. Writers needn’t be Catholic.

Workshops and live online chats cover the gamut of writing topics from idea generation to marketing a published novel; traditional and self-publishing, article writing and fiction, and much more. In addition, prominent Catholic publishers will hear pitches, giving authors an unprecedented opportunity to chat personally regardless of their ability to travel.

Carolyn will present on "The Picture-Perfect Query Letter" and "Tweeting for Visibility" on March 1, at 9 am and 10 am respectively.
Early registration is recommended. Although the conference is offered at no charge, donations are accepted; proceeds go toward future conferences. To register or for more information, go to http://www.catholicwritersconference.com.

Three subscribers/clients are involved in this good news.

For the past six months, Lynn Seraffin has been coaching/project managing the launch of Allison Maslan's new book Blast Off! The Surefire Success Plan to Launch Your Dreams into Reality http://myblastoff.com/booklaunch. Allison recently had her big launch, and her book reached NUMBER 1 in both Canada and the US in the "entrepreneurship" category ahead of books like Michael Gerber's classic E-Myth Revisited and Gary Vaynerchuk's massive seller Crush It!, and held (and is still holding) the number 1 rank for the "Hot New Seller" in small business books. "This is nothing short of an amazing acheivement, and I couldn't be more proud of Allison," says Lynn.

This success was due to the collaborative efforts of Lynn, Allison, and Yvonne Perry, along with a host of joint venture partners who seemed to be just as determined to get her to the top of the list as they were.

Allison is now getting ready to go on her big book tour, and Lynn is already getting calls from a plethora of authors seeking to hire her to create their book campaigns too! "In case anyone asks, I only work with authors in the mind-body-spirit genre (albeit that's a broad category) and I do not take on clients who are launching within 4-6 weeks of each other," Lynn says.

This success is also GREAT promo for the Grand Opening for Lynn's upcoming Spirit Authors Virtual Coaching and Learning Experience http://spiritauthors.com, February 22-26, 2010. She already has about 14 industry guests coming to share their wisdom in many facets of the mind-body-spirit publishing world to celebrate the launch of the Spirit Authors, which will provide online training, community and business building opportunities for aspiring, first time and established spirit-based authors. For now, people can sign up for updates at http://spiritauthors.com, and they will receive a VIP invitation to come to the (free) Grand Opening Webinar Week.

Celeste Terry talked to Rose Martelli, a writer for Stevenson Inc. - national publisher of non-profit manuals, newsletters etc.- twice and she requested that Celeste send her a copy of her book for a review, (which she mailed last week). "So, it is out there in the universe getting into the right hands!," says Celeste.

"My book is officially on the book shelf at the Foundation Center library - Cleveland (listed in Shelfari too). And, I've been invited to be a guest blogger with the Foundation Center. Just did my first blog Tuesday related to Haiti relief. So, things are popping!"

Celeste is author of Transforming Non-Profits For Relevancy in Challenging Times (2008) and hosts Demystifying Non-Profits on http://www.globaltalkradio.com
