     INTRODUCTION

I've been thinking that I'd like to start a radio show, tentatively called Book Marketing with Fran. That way, I could promote you and your books. I've read many of your books, both self-published and traditionally published, and am always amazed at the talent among my subscribers. The format of the show would be interviews with authors about how they promoted their books and what worked best. Problem is, I know nothing about radio. If any of you would like to either co-host the show and/or teach me the ropes, I would be most grateful.

I am still waiting for bios from more of you. There is no charge to put them up on my website. If you wish to join my low-low cost publicity service, let me know.

Playwright Wendy Wasserstein, who died on Monday at age 55, was motivated to write plays about American women at an early age. Growing up in New York, she attended Broadway plays and was struck by the absence of people like herself on stage. Like Wendy, I'm trying to put my subscribers on the map. It's hard to do alone but if we all work together, who knows what we can accomplish?

     1) PROMOTIONAL COUPS

When Barbara Morris finally landed a publisher (Gollehon Books, on her 19th try!) for her second book, CRAZY FOR CATS: A PURR-FECT LOVE STORY, she says, “my husband bought me a striking, very unusual silver cat lapel pin. I wore it constantly. It attracted lots of attention from cat lovers. People stopped me on the street or in cafes and grocery stores.

“Naturally I told them about my book, the story of my adventures with my naval officer husband and our cats (a total of eight -- seven Siamese and one Himalayan) in Germany, Japan and Hawaii. I gave them my business card (with a cat on it) and asked them for theirs so I could let them know when the book came out.

“And, of course, I listened to tales of their cats. When my book was published, I sent email announcements to the more than 40 cat lovers I had met thanks to the lapel pin. I briefly reminded them of our meeting and asked them about their cats, by name, of course. Apart from two congratulatory emails that I received from that group of people, there really is no way of knowing how many of the others bought the book. But my local Borders sold quite a few, and I like to think my lapel pin played a part in that. When my publisher discontinued warehousing my book, I bought 500 copies and continue to do a lot of my own promotion. I continue to wear my lucky pin, especially to all my book-related events-- signings in stores and at book festivals, cat shows and at my talks at retirement communities. I wear it on vacations and tuck several books in my suitcase. I average 3-5 sales per trip to my fellow tourists.

“I was fortunate to have a subject - cats - that lends itself to an attractive lapel pin. I'm sure that with a bit of imagination, many authors could come up with a design that would tie in with their books such as a heart for a romantic novel or even just a book lapel pin that could stand for a variety of subjects. In fact, I am now on the look-out for just such a pin to call attention to my third book, slice-of-life essays, for which I am currently seeking a publisher. It's never too early to start advertising.”

Collidoscope: A Multi-Cultural Explosion of Verse & Soul, compiled and edited by Latorial Faison (http://www.latorialfaison.com) and Steven Manchester (http://www.stevenmanchester.com)

In Collidoscope, poets from many diverse backgrounds will come together to offer his/her perspective of the world; verse (lyrical and prose) that has the real potential of causing others to pause and consider a reality other than their own.

Striving to make the reader feel that they have walked a mile in his/her shoes will be each poet's goal. Promoting a positive social outlook, with an emphasis on educating and enlightening the global community, will be the book's goal.

     Submitted poetry should cover:
Honest perspectives on the world today… covering such issues as race,
gender, faith & religion, sexual orientation, class status & poverty, etc. (be sure to exclude obscene or explicit material, unnecessary profanity, or vulgar language)

Send your poetry, up to 60 lines each, in the body of an e-mail to:
     shmanchester@statestreet.com or info@stevenmanchester.com (Considering
that each poet will be featuring (5) poems within the book, please send
enough material for the editorial board to consider). Also, be sure to
include your contact information and a brief author bio (no more than 50 words).

Upon publication, selected contributions will be compensated
     commensurate with that deal.

We are interested in first rights, worldwide. Please do not send
previously published material or simultaneous submissions. You will be free to republish your contribution, in English, elsewhere in the future, but we will retain rights for any and all future printings and translations of the collection.

     4) SURPRISES

Bobbi de Cordova-Hanks was stunned to receive a call from B&N - especially that her book is self-published.

“Jerry [her husband] and I got our book "Tears of Joy" (Infinity Publishing 2003) into a new Barnes and Noble in Jacksonville (FL),” she says. “They actually called us. They wanted to feature authors on women's health but the store had a policy that the profits from the book sales had to go to a local nonprofit organization in women's health. They heard about my Bosom Buddies breast cancer program and so they set up a panel with a local doctor who wrote "From Hormone Hell to Hormone Well," a local nutritionist who wrote "The Fat Detoxification Program” and us with our book.

“We all sat and answered questions on women's health and signed books. All three books were self-published. Barnes & Noble ordered our books directly from Infinity. They said it was the best book signing for local authors they ever had. Interesting isn't it?”

Book Signings and Book Fairs: How to Sell More Books

by Fern Reiss

Ever do a booksigning where you didn't sell a single book? Ever go to a book fair where you ended up spending more than you earned? It doesn't have to be that hard. Here's how to maximize your sales at any book signing or book fair:

Jazz up the table. Most bookstores and book fairs provide plain, uncovered tables at which to exhibit, and most authors don't think to bring much beyond their books. If you want to maximize book sales, it helps to make your table look inviting. Purchase the nicest, heaviest tablecloth you can afford, preferably in a color that goes well with the cover of your book. Turn your book cover into a color poster and have it mounted on an easel backing (Most copy shops will do this for under $75.) Next, think accessories: When I exhibit my book, The Infertility Diet: Get Pregnant and Prevent Miscarriage for example, I scatter pregnancy test kits around the table-because they're eye-catching, so people walk over to find out why they're there. For one of my PR clients, Katie Jay, who's publicizing NAWLS.org, her national weight loss association, I'd put up a huge poster showing her spectacular before-and-after photos. Think flowers, smells, colors, textures-be creative!

Offer food. The most successful authors know that the surest way to rope in a potential buyer is by offering them something to eat. Some books lend themselves to food displays: If you're selling a cookbook, consider a few sample treats from the book; if it's a book on travel in Tuscany, try morsels reminiscent of that part of the world. Even if yours is not a food book, however, you can do creative things with food. For my Publishing Game books, for example, I bring fortune cookies which simply say, “Writers make their own fortunes” and the PublishingGame.com website. Almost no one will turn down food. And once they've eaten your munchies, most people feel obligated to at least slow down enough to leaf through your book.

Display the book nicely. So many booksignings and book fairs feature authors who have dumped a pile of their books sloppily in the center of the table and are waiting for sales. If your stack of books doesn't look inviting, it's unlikely that you're going to attract buyers. Go look in a bookstore for ideas, and work with the theme of your book to invent new display hooks. For my book, Terrorism and Kids: Comforting Your Child, I feature a very stark, somber display. But if I were marketing a book on babies, I'd bring along a small wooden cradle and stuffed animals to surround the stack of books; if it were a book on gardening, I'd put the books in a wheelbarrow. Even if there's no logical display tie-in, put up a provocative sign: For author Margaret Benefiel, whose book, Soul at Work: Spiritual Leadership in Organizations I helped publicize, I'd put up a sign reading, “What do the Band U2 and Southwest Airlines Have in Common?” (The answer, of course, is that both
follow the principles of Soul at Work that Margaret outlines in her book.) Don't forget to set out a stack of your postcards; some people won't want to buy on the spot, but might buy online later.

Engage customers. So many exhibiting authors sit behind their stack of books and wait. The best way to sell books is to be proactive. And the best kind of proactive is to ask people a question-one that does not require a yes/no answer. “Would you like to look at my book about pets?” might get a no. “Do you have a pet?” is a bit better. But “Which do you prefer, dogs or cats?” is a sure-fire winner. In publicizing my Publishing Game books, I could ask people if they want to hear more about publishing. But instead, I ask authors, “How many books do you want to sell this year?” - a great lead-in to explaining the many ways the Publishing Game books and workshops can help them to sell more books. So ask a controversial question, a perplexing question, an inviting question. And keep the conversation going until the customer asks about your books. You're always more likely to make a sale if you're not the one who initiates it.

Then make the sale. It's hard to sell books if you're ambivalent about selling. Once you've captured their interest-once you've explained the book-once you've outlined the benefits-close the sale. Better than asking them if they want the book, assume they want the book. Try something like, “Should I dedicate this to you or is it for a gift?” or “Would you like this wrapped as a gift for someone?” (Don't forget to bring some gift wrap and bows!) Or how about, “If you'd like to buy one for a friend as well, we can ship that for you directly.” Sometimes people need a little nudge. So nudge. And don't forget to smile and have fun! The more fun you're having, the more books you'll sell-guaranteed.

2) PROMOTIONAL COUPS

One of Pamela Thibodeaux's best promo tools is what she calls an "envelope flyer."

“On one side I announce Tempered Hearts, book 1 in a 5 part series; on the other, Tempered Dreams (book 2),” she explains.

“I get four to a page,” she says. “It's really simple. Print the first page (Tempered Hearts), then turn it over and print page 2 (Tempered Dreams) on the back. (The book covers should be back to back)

Then cut them into 4 separate 'flyers,' each side advertises one book. They fit perfectly in a regular (business) size envelope.

It is similar to bookmarks, but in most instances smaller and can be folded, printed on plain or colored paper and very easy to handle. Laminated, they make great bookmarks! I guess the main thing is that one fits into an envelope very easily and you're advertising both books....getting a lot of information in a small amount of space. You can also punch a very small hole in the corner, thread a ribbon through it and tie up candy or something as a little gift bag.”

Tempered Hearts and Tempered Dreams were originally published through Writers Exchange Epublishing in 2000/2001. The books have since have been contracted by Com Star Media in 2005, with new revisions and covers. http://www.comstar-media.com

Pamela's advice to authors - “Send them out in EVERY piece of mail that leaves your home, leave them with your tip at restaurants, send them with your deposit at banks, hand them out at Dr's office, dentist, libraries, grocery lines, whenever and wherever you can! They are easy to handle and easy to produce and easy to use in striking up a conversation.

Another great idea..y'know all that junk mail you get with the 'business reply' envelopes? Send the envelope back with a couple of those in it!”

3) GRIST FOR YOUR MILL

Bob Berkowitz, a certified hypnotherapist and former senior White House correspondent for CNN, calls Dr. Gilda Carle's new concept about relationships "provocative and controversial”: The person you fall in love with is the person you may want to leave. He was referring to No 7 video by Gilda, Do You Leave the One Your Love? on which they discuss the concept.

Berkowitz has also served as the men's correspondent on NBC's Today Show and is author of What Men Won't Tell You but Women Need to Know. His 16-part relationship video series includes five by Gilda.

Kathe Gogolewski, a retired elementary schoolteacher and author of TATO (Wings Press 2005), a fantasy adventure for middle grade readers, will be conducting MAD Scientist workshops for kids at her local Barnes and Noble in Oceanside, California on Saturdays in May at 2 pm. Since there is magic in the story of TATO, she will engage kids in experiments that explain some of the illusions. Before and after the workshops, she will give readings and sign her book. Marilyn Meredith reports that The Public Service Writers Conference will be in Las Vegas in March. “This is a good conference not only for law enforcement officers who are writing, but also those who are writing about law enforcement officers,” she says.

“Anyone who comes is welcome to bring their books for sale. I'm going to be one of the presenters, but I can assure you, you'll have a great time. You'll meet some great folks and can ask lots of questions.”

6) A GOOD QUESTION

Janice Law would like to know if anyone “can recommend companies that sell and imprint promotional items. Tiny items one could have imprinted with a book title, and give away to purchasers. Very, very inexpensive items, maybe a few cents each? (NOT bookmarks).”

7) SERENDIPITY

Catherine Franz sent me an email about her new radio show, Let's Talk Marketing Show, so naturally I wrote back asking if I could be a guest. This resulted in a long telephone conversation in which she asked me to send her my book. When she received it, the book happened to open to page 270 and the heading “Radio” caught her eye. Linda Pynaker's quote that “radio is definitely more receptive to discussing fiction than television news” must have attracted Catherine's attention, along with Linda's mention about her well-received media kit.

I'll be on Catherine's show on March 21 and Linda, March 28. The show airs Tuesdays, 10-11 a.m., EST. http://www.letstalkmarketingshow.com
[Editor's Note: The show will cover all types of marketing, not just books. Catherine is celebrating February and March as Writing and Publishing Month].

8) KUDOS

Laurel Johnson wrote that she has some good news to hare. "Diversify" and "network" are the key words here, she says.

“I will be interviewed on the State College PA PBS station on Feb. 23. The producer read an advance copy of my latest book and loved it so wanted to interview me.

I am the featured poet on Quill and Parchment for February.
Several of my nature photographs will be featured in the Spring issue of New Works Review.

My latest book, My Name is Esther Clara, will soon be released from Dandelion Books.

Networking and diversifying my art is my technique of getting my name circulated.”

Laurel practices what she preaches - She is author of a non-fiction book, THE GRASS DANCE (PublishAmerica 2001), a work of fiction, THE ALLEY OF WISHES (Dandelion Books 2003), and co-author of a book of poetry, COLOR OF LAUGHTER COLOR OF TEARS (Winterwolf Publishing 2004). http://laurel.johnson.net
