Screenwriting Advice Article!

You are the Box Office Smash: The Personal Screenplay
by Gordy Hoffman

Right this very second, in the heart of every struggling, undiscovered screenwriter, in the dark, hidden corner deep within, there is a voice, a clear whisper, saying one thing:

You're never gonna figure this out.

And this is not referring to the story with its gaping hole, the finale missing a payoff, the hit and miss humor, the flat title.

I'm talking about freedom. The freedom to work as a screenwriter. Compensation for a home for family and a life. The resources to wake up and ply your craft and pay the freight, without obstacle. The chance to see your writing made into pictures, to work with the industry's best, to fulfill this goal of professional screenwriter. Hollywood success.

Behind this voice is the idea that somehow, some way, you'll find the hero, or the hook, logline or pitch that will punch your golden ticket. If you could only figure out what the studio wants, if you can only get a solid bead to this game, you know you can write and execute. What is the script I should write to get an agent? What is the one that will sell? It's not that I don't know how to write, I know how to write screenplays, I just need to know what they want, even though I think I know what they want, but I don't think I have the idea that they want. Yeah.

I'm not gonna figure this out, whispers the voice.

Why this uneasiness? Does it originate within ourselves? I don't think so. But where does it come from? The daily obsession with box office grosses? The news of the seven figure deals to newbies? The endless procession of boneheadedly conceived franchises-in-waiting arriving in the theatres every Friday? People winning Academy Awards for movies you would not be caught dead writing? Recognizing an idea you came up with years ago on your couch, produced with a $130 million budget drowning in CGI?

All these things are but a few of the possible reasons why this seeds unhealthy doubt and confusion in the modern screenwriter. Tracking these forces outside us and beyond our control in an effort to trudge the path to a successful screenwriting career will prove to most to be unproductive and corrosive. Basically, trying to figure out what Hollywood wants will land us in a resentment that makes "giving up" a sane response to the very challenge which used to inspire us. In short, we cannot chase a perceived trend and remember our dreams.

You cannot look at the marketplace and find your voice. You can find ideas, trends, and inspiration there, perhaps, but you can find these things driving in traffic as well. But listening to your voice is the key to creating original, compelling stories.

Your life is your own story. You have a completely unique thread of experience. By allowing yourself to express these emotional experiences, your screenplay, your story, will be different from any other and powerful, as original as your fingerprint.

Why is it powerful? When we have the courage to be specific about what we know about living, we create an authentic world an audience recognizes as the life they are living on planet Earth. This connects your audience to your story. This connection is the foundation of the phenomena of story.

Why does story mean so much to us? We recognize the triumphs and tragedies of our lives, with all the hilarity and tears. By seeing it, we are validated and it underscores meaning and purpose to living.

If we don't use what we've collected in life in our hearts and spirits, then our story loses its authenticity and the connection the audience should make fails. They do not see themselves, and when they leave the theater, they do not call their friends. When people do not call their friends after seeing a movie, the movie bombs.

When a writer opens their person to their work, when they allow themselves to be vulnerable, to risk exposure of the secrets of their life story, they take a huge step towards creating a screenplay of substantial value, a screenplay with a greater potential of a large number of tickets sold.

This is precisely why art and commerce have remained bedfellows for thousands of years. To look at the relationship between art and commerce as adversarial or incompatible is just plain foolish. Art happens when people invest their spirits in their work without fear, and story is artful when the writing is truthful and the writer is authentic.

And what do we have to be honest about? We can only lie about what we know, and we can only tell the truth about what we know. And that is what has happened to us, our life story. This is what we share.

This is not a pitch to write "what you know." This is not about writing stories about where you work or where you live. This is about writing about what you felt. You can imagine characters and worlds and actions and speech you've never personally experienced, but if you remember to infuse your choices with your emotional and spiritual struggles and victories as a human being, your screenplay will be different in the very best sense of the word.

The question you have to answer is not what does Hollywood want today. The question is how honest of a writer do you want to be. I guarantee you can write a blockbuster, you can write a box office hit. This will happen when you find an audience. And the correct path to this crowd of people is listening to yourself. If you practice, you will develop an inner ear for who you are and what you know and you will become masterful in loading your work with your fingerprints. Writing is personal work. You are the guitar. You are the box of paint. Give of that and your audience will remember why life is good and they will talk of you.

INTRODUCTION

This issue was put to bed early since I left for south Florida on Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2010, to return home March 9th. I will need your help in providing material for the next issue more than ever.

Nearly every article I read about promoting ebooks mentions JV (joint venture) partnerships. If any of you would like to sell my ebooks (one or all ten), I would give you a 50% commission on each sale. If the book is $20, you get $10. I would take care of emailing the pdf files. All you need to know is what's written at the bottom of this email, plus what's provided: show title and theme, host's name, guest criteria, where aired, email, website, phone (optional) and best method of contact. Let me know of your interest.

How to write a Best-Selling Book and Self-Publish it

By Daya Devi- Doolin

Take that book you've wanted to write, out of the desk drawer, now. Get the title of your book in mind that excites you and one that will excite your readers.

* Email
* Print Article
* Add to Favorites
* Flag Article
* Bookmark and Share

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging Instructions

Things You'll Need:

* Things you will need to apply the techniques here: Patience with yourself. Patience with the process. Desire to see the finished product in your mind's eye and visualize. Desire to serve others.

Step 1

Try out many titles first and get responses from friends, relatives or loved ones. Get copyright form from Library of Congress online for media category and pay about $35 to register it. Write on the topic to which you are familiar with, passionate about and desire to share your truth about with others that you know will benefit them.

Step 2

Ask guidance from within for the chapter titles and subheadings that are appropriate. Fill in the blanks from your knowledge and experiences relating to your best-selling book for each chapter. Proofread, proofread and proofread and use expertise of an editor. Use a software geared to book writing and formatting. Use a software that will format your book for paperback or hardcover and decide if you want a 5 _" x 8 _" size book, 6 "x 9", etc.

Step 3

You will have to decide on which kind of paper weight #50 or #55 lb weight and if you want to have illustrations, photographs or figures in your book.

Decide on the way that you wish to reap the benefits of the profits by self-publishing it yourself and decide whether or not to use print on-demand companies who would reap the benefits instead of you. They will take up to an 80% royalty for themselves and you'd have no guarantee that they will have any interest in marketing and promoting your book for or with you.

Step 4

Proclaim all along at each step that your work is a best-selling book, be it non-fiction, fiction, romance, educational, etc. It is from the beginning of that thought you had that develops its matching vibration and the Law of Being or Law of Attraction propels you into that frequency of knowing and being. Keep that feeling strong.

Step 5

Find a reputable company to print your book, one that's been in the business for years and years like Cushing Malloy, or Morris Publishing. They only have your interest at heart and at doing a great job for you.

Step 6

The latter company will send away for copyright forms for you, get an ISBN number for your book and other related minor but important things for you like a bar code. They will also offer cover designs for you that are customized just for you but that is not original. Other authors use the same template but it's arranged for your cover material. They give you step by step directions on how to have them publish any photos you wish in the book and the payment they ask is reasonable, I feel for all the work they put into it for your best-seller.

Step 7

With the former company for example, you give them your cover work and they cut to trim size to your desire, you give them a pdf file, they return it to you to check for any typos or formatting problems before they get set to print your best-seller. You order any number of books, minimum 250 you wish printed with them and the same with the latter company. You are given a publishing guide booklet which is excellent and it makes your book processing far less scarier in order to tackle the job you want done.

Step 8

Even though I didn't use the one company, they answered all my questions whenever I called them. I never felt that they felt, "We have to keep our information a secret." I didn't use them because I had my own cover design in mind for my book, and I knew how to take care of my own ISBN number and did my own copyright registration. I founded my own publications company, and it enabled me to apply for a Library of Congress Card Catalogue number so libraries could purchase and catalog it in their library easily.

Step 9

There is a rainbow at the end of your journey!

There is a rainbow at the end of your journey!

These are only a few steps but if you start out confidently and steadily, you will have what you want and it won't be in the desk drawer any longer but on bookshelves, in bookstores selling and in homes benefiting people.

Novelist Bruce Kimmel is author of Benjamin Kritzer (2002), Kritzerland (2003) and Kritzer Time (2004), all published by 1st Books Library (now AuthorHouse). All named for the protagnist, Benjamin Kritzer, the books are "thinly veiled fictions" of Bruce's childhood in Los Angeles. After hiring a publicist and finding it "a waste of money," he found that the "best and smartest thing I did and something I totally recommended to all my author chums is when I was nosing around classmates.com one day and found a message board for my high school class... I posted about the book there, and a couple of people bought them via Amazon." Those people told friends, who in turn told other friends, and their friends passed the word along to their friends and posted how much they liked the books. I ended up selling hundreds of books because of it, Bruce says, and "actually got a decent royalty check" on the first two books. "The word of mouth has been incredible and you can't buy that sort
of thing." http://www.haineshisway.com

3 Tips for Guilt Free Marketing As An Author
By Judith Sherven, PhD and Jim Sniechowski, PhD

So many people write us, explaining how guilty they feel doing anything that smacks of “getting people to buy their book” - “getting people to spend their money.”

For Authors and Service Providers this isn’t surprising since we’ve all been trained to be in Service – not in Business.

But the fact is that anyone who exchanges services for money IS in business.

And as a service provider, which is usually why you decided to write your book -- to extend the reach of the service you provide -- you still must make a living. After all, you have your personal expenses to cover as well as your professional expenses like office rent, phone, accountant, perhaps malpractice insurance and professional dues. And the list can go on and on when you include continuing education and the need to put away money for retirement. And you’re willing to incur all those expenses because you are committed to providing your
professional care to your clients and customers - AND to your readers.

No matter what you’d prefer to call it, that’s a business, like it or not. And sad to say, most authors and service providers feel guilty about marketing and selling what they do. That must stop in order for you to put your gifts out into the world big time -- for the greater benefit of all - you and your readers and clients.

Three Tips for Guilt-Free Marketing

1 - Understand, deep in your heart and soul, that people are looking for what you provide. They need what you provide and they can’t get it
if you don’t make yourself and the benefits of your book(s) and services known out in the marketplace.

2 - The world of commerce has for too long been dominated by hard sell, money hungry trespassers on the human soul. It is now long overdue that your consciousness and conscience as an author and service provider enter the marketplace in order to help personal transformation on an evolutionary scale.

3) As an author and service provider you do your clients and yourself a disservice if you are not in service to yourself as well as those who need what you provide. Otherwise you are a poor model for whatever it is you stand for. And you cannot spread the word about your particular genius from a basis of spiritual poverty.

The spiritual challenge for all authors and service provides is to rejoice in being in business – for the professional growth, the increased income, the personally demanding spiritual lessons it provides, and for all the greater, grander benefits and opportunities it provides for your specific audience – when you approach what you do as a Business!

Judith Sherven, PhD & Jim Sniechowski, PhD, (better known as Judith & Jim) are best-selling authors of six books, incluidng the #1 bestseller The Heart Of Marketing - Love Your Customers and They Will Love You Back (Morgan James Publishing, 2009). http://TheHeartOfMarketing.com

The husband and wife psychology team are producers of the "Bridging Heart and Marketing" conferences, and founders of the Soft Sell Marketers Association.

(2) PROMOTIONAL COUP

Alan Cook's latest mystery/suspense novel, Run Into Trouble (AuthorHouse 2009), takes place during an ultramarathon along the California coast.

"I wanted to connect with potential readers who were runners or interested in running, instead of just marketing to mystery readers," he says. "I contacted RUNNING TIMES magazine and was able to negotiate for an ad within my budget. I also sent a copy of the book to the editor. This led to a review that ran in the magazine and gave me a definite boost in sales."

(3) GRIST FOR YOUR MILL

Kimberanne Weaver, host of My Psychic Radio, has negotiated with Blog Talk Radio to create her "own network within their website," and is looking for authors who want to be radio hosts. "It is a great opportunity for them to promote their books," she says. "The authors do not need to be metaphysical. The network will be generic and will welcome all types of programs."

Currently, the monthly rate for Premium Networking Hosting is $99.99. There is a free hosting package, "but the features are limited," she says.

"My radio network is the foundation of what I am creating," says Kimberanne. "Once the framework is established I will be setting up a site where individuals can market their services through teleseminars."
Here is a link to the information on the hosting package http://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=0AQbRTH22GUwPZGQ3amduNnNfMzFoYnF3c25mZg&hl=en

If you are interested, Kimberanne emailed me a Comparison Sheet, which shows what you get for the different packages. I will be happy to email you the attachment.

(4) WONDERFUL WEBSITES

http://www.wetpaint.com - You can create a free webpage on any subject you like and add a photo album.

https://dtp.amazon.com/mn/signin - Want your book or ebook to be available for Kindle users? Sign up for Amazon's Digital Text Platform. Make sure after you sign in that you click "My Shelf" right away. Otherwise, you will get confused, like I did. Also, be certain to answer all the questions. You are not finished until it says "Publish." I must say, I wrote to Amazon Friday afternoon when I was having difficulty, and received a response within a half hour. After approval, your book or ebook is added to the Kindle Store and your book will appear on a typical Amazon page. What a thrill it was to see my ebooks on Amazon!!

(5) FROM THE PEN OF....................

Make More Money with Information Products

Once you build an audience for your book(s), you have an opportunity to make even more money. Your fans will be eager to purchase your future books and will also be interested in other types of products.

Information products such as e-books, special reports, and teleseminars can be a fantastic source of revenue for authors. These products are most successful when they teach the buyer how to do something.

Following are some examples:

The author of a guide to fishing could also sell:

* A special report on the best fishing destinations in a specific state.
* A booklet about how to tie flies.
* An e-book with recipes for cooking fish.

The author of a children's book could also sell:

* An audio book version of the book.
* A companion workbook with fun activities for kids.
* An instructional report on how to help kids enjoy reading.

The author of a detective novel could also sell:

* A special report with alternate endings to the book.
* An e-book with short true crime stories.
* An instructional guide on how to write a detective novel.

The author of a business marketing book could also sell:

* An e-book with real-world marketing case studies.
* A workbook that helps readers develop a marketng plan.
* An instructional teleseminar that teaches listeners new marketing strategies.
