Publicize Your Novel
by Fern Reiss

“It's so much harder to publicize a novel,” is the lament of many authors. Harder maybe, but not impossible. Try these methods of novel publicity:

Put nonfiction hooks in your novel. The reason most authors find nonfiction easier to publicize than fiction is that nonfiction, almost by definition, contains 'hooks' around which you can leverage publicity: How-to books on golfing, for example, can lend themselves to doing talk radio shows where you share your golfing techniques; nonfiction guides to golden retrievers can become print articles on caring for your golden retriever.

But novels can enjoy the same sorts of hooks if you consciously insert them. So think carefully about your passions-hobbies, pastimes, collections, pets-and then integrate your favorites into your novel. If you're an avid golfer, make one of your characters an avid golfer. If you love your golden retriever, put one in your novel. That way, you can get the same broadcast and print coverage for your novel that you would for a nonfiction book with that hook.

Market to your hooks. Once you've got a few good nonfiction hooks in your novel, plan your marketing efforts around them. If your character is an avid golfer, you can sell your novel at golf conventions and golf shows and golf pro shops and golf courses. If your novel focuses around golden retrievers, you can find and market to the (vast) dog-loving audience. Golfers like to read books about golfers, and dog-lovers like to read books about dogs, so be sure you're working your hooks and going after your natural audience.

Include reality in your novel. The more real items you can include in your novel, the more you broaden your marketing options. So include real locations, real corporations, real associations. (Of course, be sure you use these real venues and groups just as colorful background detail; don't say anything libelous and don't violate trademarks, obviously.) Once your book includes real locations and groups, you can try to sell your books in those locations, make quantity sales to those corporations and associations. (And if anyone can figure out a subtle way for me to include Canyon Ranch or Bermuda in my next book, please let me know.)

Figure out a reading alternative. Sadly, not that many people attend book readings, unless the author is already famous. So what can you do if you're a good, but not-yet-famous novelist? Design an alternative to the traditional reading. Again, follow your niche: If your book features a knitter, design a knitting event; if your book showcases a chef, put together a cooking demonstration. Your target audience will be interested in a nonfiction presentation or event just as much (or maybe more) than a reading-and you'll likely sell more books as a result.

Try some novel ideas. Finally, capitalize on all the clever creative tricks you can maneuver only as the writer of a novel. For example, invite visitors to your website to compete for the rights to have a cameo role in your next novel - a sure-fire way to increase your ability to harvest readers' email addresses.

Or print up t-shirts with cartoons or caricature based on your novel. (One writer I consulted with ended up creating a whole set of body tattoos based on her novel.) Or walk around a busy resort town dressed as a character from your novel, handing out promotional postcards. Think out of that proverbial box - and work some novel ideas that nonfiction writers really can't touch.

By following these suggestions, you'll be able to simply and effectively publicize your novel. Please let me know how it goes!

2) PROMOTIONAL COUPS

Vada Gipson, a resident of Northern California, has many promotional tips imbedded in her email to me that can be adopted by all authors. Her two books are the first of a trilogy, and Vada is working on the third book now:

“My first book, The Quests (AuthorHouse 2003), was a learning experience,” she began. “I have a lot of friends, and am active in a number of organizations. I let all of them know that I would be happy to give a program if I could sell my books. The United Methodist Women, of which I am president of the local unit, plan their programs a year ahead in the fall of the year. I sent a book cover postcard to the presidents of the units in this district, saying that I would give a program if the unit would provide me with housing. It was successful. I had about ten invitations, and delightful hostesses.

“I expect to do the same this fall regarding the marketing of Aflame With the Spirit: Philip the Evangelist (AuthorHouse 2006). I'm so close to Oregon that I plan to include units in the Southern part of that state, too. Ever since, I've been asked, 'When is your next book coming out?' I made a mailing list of those who paid by check, and have sent postcard covers announcing Aflame With the Spirit.

“My program has developed with experience. My first sale as a freelance writer was how I made a patchwork jacket. For the program, I take the jacket, and depending on the weather, because it is a warm outfit, I wear the pants that go with it, too, and have the magazine to show. It has a full page picture of me wearing the jacket. Then I tell how I came to write the books.

“This time, with Aflame, I sent out pre-publication (handmade) copies of the book to selected people who said they'd endorse the book, so I could have their endorsements right on the cover. Carmen Leal's book 'You Can Market Your Book' helped me so very much. I'd recommend it to anyone who is self-marketing."

Vada was on my radio show last week and I asked if her patchwork jacket had anything to do with her books. She said 'no.'” Nevertheless, it's connected with a magazine article she wrote about the jacket so she wears it whenever she speaks in public.

Larry Portzline, founder of bookstore tourism, has come up with an idea for a search engine for independent bookstores.

Please read the article from http://www.shelf-awareness.com about http://www.bookwormzonline.com. You can even enter your own favorite indies on the site to give other booklovers an alternative to the chains.

The idea was based on http://www.delocator.net, which lists indie coffee shops and cafes as alternatives to Starbucks.

“Wouldn't it be great to get all of the indie bookstores in the country listed? Says Larry. “How cool would that be? Tell your friends!”

4) LIGHT BULB

Pinkie Payanya, author of mysteries, romance and historical novels, was “standing in line at a discount store the other day and a woman had 3 or 4 books in her hand, raving to a friend about how she bought 2 or 3 books a week,” Pinkie recalls. “I only had a business card and one puny beat up bookmark in my purse so I had to let it go.

“But that day I went home and made up post cards - you can buy the forms at any discount store or stationery store. I put all four of my books on one side [of the postcard], with small colored covers of each and to the right of each cover I did a short blurb of what they were about, who published them and the ISBN#. On the other side I put my email address, website and P.O. Box. At the top of each side of the card I put BOOKS BY PINKIE PARANYA in color. These aren't to mail; they are to keep on one's person to hand out. I'll be ready next time!”

Pinkie is author of HERR SCHNOODLE & MCBEE (Five Star Mysteries, Sept 2006); TREASURE OF THE AMAZON (Five Star Expressions 2006); TIANA, GIFT OF THE MOON (Sands Publishing 2004), 2nd in the prize winning trilogy; and RAVEN WOMAN (Sands Publishing 2002), award winning Early American Historical. Pinkie also has two hard cover books by Five Star Expressions, one published this month and the other in Sept 2006. In addition, she sold a romance to Triskelion, publication date unknown.

5) MISERY LOVES COMPANY

Kamy Wicoff's book, I DO BUT I DON'T: WALKING DOWN THE AISLE WITHOUT LOSING YOUR MIND (Da Capo Press 2006). “I think the biggest problem has been that it is an in-between book, neither chirpy, gimmicky 'how-to' nor a scholarly, 'big think' book,” she says.

“'I Do but I Don't' is a combination of a humorous, conversational style and personal story and a critical, analytical examination of weddings and the way contemporary American women are dealing with their time as brides. So it has been hard to make it palatable to the media. Women's magazines say 'too intellectual' and NPR and the like say 'too how-to.' I also got a review that suggested that brides with 'stars in their eyes' should not buy the book because it would make them think too much and too critically about the whole thing.” http://www.kamywicoff.com

It states on the site: “If you are a Christian author writing for the Internet, we invite you to join our list group!”

The site has a good links page and links to reviewers who accept e-book formats.

I couldn't find a contact but I saw that subscriber Lillie Ammann is the blog administrator and wrote her an email. Here's her reply:

“The moderator of Christian E-Author is Lauralee Bliss at lrbliss2001@yahoo.com

“There are no membership dues or fees of any kind for Christian E-Author. Membership entails simply signing up for the Yahoo group. The group offers support and discussion for Christians writing for electronic publication. Members do not have to be published already to join; we have some aspiring writers as well, but I believe most have Web sites that sell their work or promote work published and sold elsewhere on the Internet, and promotion is one of the major discussion topics on the list.

“Member books are promoted on the organization's Web site; however, right now, there is a transition of Webmasters so the Web site is behind in updates but hopefully that will change very soon.

“We have two blogs - one is a book review blog, so members' books can be promoted by posting reviews, and the other is a blog about writing and electronic publishing from a Christian perspective.”

Lillie is author of an e-book from Dream Jobs to Go, a division of Intellectua.com. INTRODUCTION

Since starting my on-line publicity service, I have become somewhat of an aficionado on talk radio shows for authors. It dawned on me that I should write another book, given that there is no central place to find these shows. Even when a station has a website, it isn't always evident if they have guests, and, if so, do they invite authors?

Like Book Marketing from A-Z, the book will be published by Infinity Publishing. John Harnish, my contact there, liked the idea, and a radio host in Montreal wrote “what a great concept for a book!”

Admittedly, it will take a long time amassing the information but at least I have a head start.

Many entries will include guest comments and if you wish to be included, please email me the names of the radio shows you've been on (whether or not I arranged it or not) and a paragraph on the experience. I plan to have an index with the names of the authors, their books and websites.

Working with Wisdom to Promote Your Book
by Tricia Molloy

When it comes to promoting and selling our books, we all have something in common. We could benefit from the wise counsel of a trusted business partner.

The good news is that this partner is already here but has been sadly underused and neglected. Your business partner is a powerful force with all the wisdom of the universe and always has your best interests at heart. It's your Higher Power or Higher Consciousness-the Divine Wisdom within you that you can access at any time for a wealth of information, ideas, support and guidance.

You don't have to know all the answers; you just need to know where to look. And often the place to look is inside to make decisions, solve problems and come up with creative ideas. Follow these 10 universal principles to increase your success and joy as an author.

1) Tap into Divine Wisdom: Your Inner Guidance is Calling. Are you looking for innovative ways to reach the media or connect with other successful authors for mutual support and guidance? Try these five strategies: meditation, intuition, dreams, prayer and “God Winks,” which is paying attention to coincidences or synchronicities.

2) Define Your Life Purpose: Setting Intentions. When your life purpose is in alignment with your life's work, all the pieces seem to fall into place and your work as an author becomes play. Look at what motivates you, your deepest values and your natural gifts to help you define your life purpose and set intentions to support it. My Life Purpose Statement is: Through support and by example, I inspire others to follow their dreams and live joyfully on purpose. That statement inspired me to write my book and motivates me to coach, speak and write about working with wisdom.

3) Embrace Prosperity: You Deserve Unlimited Abundance. Once you realize that abundance is your birthright and you need to circulate money for it to grow, you will begin to experience the effortless flow of prosperity in all aspects of your book business. Keep in mind that prosperity goes beyond money to perfect health, loving relationships and a true sense of grace and ease in everything you do.

4) Clean Out the Clutter: The Universe Will Fill the Vacuum. A cluttered workplace distracts us and drains our energy. Throw out the garbage and set up systems that will keep you organized. By clearing that space, you have created a vacuum that the universe will fill with people and opportunities that serve your highest good.

5) Stay Present: That's Where the Gifts Are. Resist the temptation to multitask all the time and instead focus your full attention and all your senses on the task at that moment. Use the “at this moment” approach while working on a book proposal, being interviewed for an article or meeting with a prospective publisher. You can solve problems faster, show a deeper level of respect for those around you-thereby earning more respect-and reduce the stress you feel from juggling too many things.

6) Live Your Truth: Time for an Integrity Checkup. When our thoughts and actions conflict with the truth, we waste precious energy and tarnish our reputation. By increasing your level of integrity in thought, word and deed, you will transform all your relationships, including the one with yourself.

7) Engage the Law of Attraction: Your Thoughts Become Your Reality. The Law of Attraction states that energy attracts like energy. When your vibrational energy is high and light, which comes from love, trust and peace, you will attract people and circumstances that vibrate at that same level. To reach and maintain a high level, participate in nurturing activities like eating and drinking healthy, exercising, playing, laughing, reading inspiring books, enjoying a hobby, and giving thanks. What you focus on will expand, so keep your thoughts on the solution, not the problem.

8) See to Believe: The Power of Visualization. Follow the lead of every top athlete by visualizing success. What can you visualize as an author? It might be seeing yourself signing copies for a long line of enthusiastic readers or delivering dynamic book talks in exotic locations. I visualized that and was just invited to present two workshops at an executive women's weekend retreat at a five-star resort and spa in Mexico in February. Make sure to engage all your senses and infuse that image with all the positive emotions you would feel as if it were true. Begin with the end in mind. Visualization creates a space for reality to unfold, just like you pictured it.

9) Affirm Success: Creating, Positive, Powerful Statements. Decide what you want to be true in your business and create a short, positive statement in the present, as if it were already so. Some examples are: “I am a wildly successful author and millions of people read and love my books.” “I love to speak and share my story with others.” Post it and say it regularly. Some people prefer to rewrite their affirmations each morning and others sing or chant them to bring it deep into their soul.

10) Give Thanks Often: Cultivating an Attitude of Gratitude. Keeping a gratitude journal is the first step to opening up to more blessings as an author. Commit to writing in it at the end of each day. Include one unique entry each time and you will begin to seek out new reasons to be thankful throughout the day.

(3) GRIST FOR YOUR MILL

Stacey Maxwell was so excited that Quality Books (The Best of America's Independent Presses) will be distributing her book, CONSUMMATE CONNECTICUT: DAY TRIPS WITH PANACHE (Cat-Tales Press 2006). “There's NO stopping now!,” she says.

I asked if Quality Books is a distributor, and she replied that it is.

“A wonderful publisher AND librarian, Paige Owens gave me this lead (Possum Trot Press, http://www.possumtrotpress.com,” says Stacey. “I am amazed at the support I've received from other independent publishers--but that is another story!

“Anyway, QBI deals strictly with libraries -- thousands of them, including public, school, academic, corporate and special libraries with a variety of marketing and distribution programs. What really differentiates QBI is that professional sales reps make thousands of face-to-face sales visits to libraries. For instance, I asked our local library director about QBI and, indeed, her rep 'Joe' meets with her on a monthly basis to discuss the marketing trends and options to effectively stock library shelves.

“Just a few of the publishers that they represent: The Taunton Press; Ideals, Willow Creek Press; Hunter House; Family Enrichment Publications; Happy Viking Crafts; Little Moose Press; Hobby House Press; Golden Anchor Press.

“QBI, 'Best of America's Independent Presses' has served the library market since 1964! The web address is http://www.quality-books.com. They have specific requirements; for instance, I believe they only represent the paperback book market. Upon request, an application is sent out via U.S. mail; after it is completed, you enclose a sample book and a committee decides whether or not to represent the book.”

http://www.cattalespress.com.

[Editor's Note - I contacted Quality Books to ask if they accepted books from individual authors. They do, “but are accepting only 2006 and 2007 copyrights at this point in time.” Unfortunately, my book was published in 2005. If your book qualifies, visit the site, send an email to the one provided and you will be emailed a literature packet].

Among them is http://www.adpost.com, a free classified ad site where you can post your ad in many different countries. There are several categories for goods and services, and a sub-category called “Consumer Section” for books in all genres.

Another link is http://www.ad-to-the-web.com, which submits your classified ad to more than 150 major free classified ad sites, at .50 per ad.

(5) FEEDBACK

Don Keith wrote, in response to Larry Portzline's idea: “I guess you could chalk it up to 'great minds think alike,' but the idea in the latest newsletter from Larry Portzline about a search engine/lookup for independent booksellers is already a reality, and is very well done. Visit http://www.booksense.com”

Don is author of 15 books, including the forthcoming FINAL PATROL, from Penguin, and THE BEAR, from Cumberland House Press. http://www.donkeith.com

Theresa Jensen Lacey was once again inspired by something she read in this newsletter. This time it was the suggestion in the feature article by Fern Reiss about putting nonfiction hooks into your fiction and arranging events around something in your fiction.

She had already done the latter. In the June 21st issue, she related doing a reading and signing of her YA novel, GROWING SEASON (Authorhouse 2002), at her local airport during its Celebration of Flight day. The book is about “two misfit kids who've been dumped for the summer and discover a crazy half-Comanche Ag-pilot and help him renovate a Stearman bi-plane.” On that day she sold a case of books.

Her good fortune didn't end there.

About two weeks later, she was contacted by her local school system.

“One of the teachers I'd signed a book to was also on the county reading association, the ones who choose books for our students to read in school, and she loved GROWING SEASON,” says Theresa. “The county wanted to 'adopt' my novel into their Character Ed. curriculum. The first order turned out to be a whopping 725 copies of GROWING SEASON, with more to come.

“Yes, Fran, it DOES pay to 'hook' your novel or nonfiction book into events in your area or nearby. I'm living proof that it works.”

Follow Up:

Sigrid Macdonald reports that her radio interview with Jesse Dylan on The Good Life Show on August 1, 2006 “went extremely well.”
http://www.tglshow.com

“I really liked him -- very personable, asked pertinent questions, and he did his very best to promote my book.” [GETTING HIP: RECOVERY FROM A TOTAL HIP REPLACEMENT (AuthorHouse 2004)]. “He mentioned the title several times and asked me where people could find it, along with the name of my web site.” http://sigridmacdonald.blogspot.com

“He had a lot of enthusiasm and sincerity, which don't always go together. I can't imagine how people can get excited about hip replacements -- if I hadn't had one myself, I would never have any interest in the topic -- but he maintained a high level of professionalism and energy, so the topic sounded interesting and relevant.”

Sigrid was originally supposed to be on for a half hour but it had to be cut down to 15 minutes. The executive producer, Sam Mednick, said she hoped to have Sigrid on another time.

(7) SURPRISES

File this under “you just never know.”

Alycia Ripley “was shopping in the store, Tuesday Morning, and when I got to the cashier, it was this young guy maybe 18 or 19 who was telling me how he wanted to be a writer and was moving to NYC for college. I mentioned how I was an author and got my MFA at NYU and his eyes totally lit up and he wanted to hear about everything.

“When I mentioned the name (of my book) 'Traveling With An Eggplant' [Trafford 2005] and my website http://www.alyciaripley.com, he got very excited and said he had heard of it before. He proceeded to call his friend who worked somewhere else in the plaza and asked what the name of the book was that he and his sister had just read. He then yelled into the phone that he was talking with the author of that particular book and the friend then came down to Tuesday morning and was excited to meet me! He and his sister had both read about it in the paper and heard of it through word of mouth in Toronto. Apparently the buzz is really growing. The cashier can't wait to read it and is coming to my book signing at Presentations, a gift store and Carriage House lunch spot, in Clarence, NY (suburb of Buffalo) on Thursday, September 14th to pick up a copy.

“I'm just thrilled to hear how the word has gotten around and how excited people get to meet the author of the book. It was just so random to meet fans through shopping at Tuesday Morning!"

Shirley Cheng had her "first book signing at a bookstore, Borders Books & Music to be exact," she reports. "I gave an inspirational talk, and it was very well-received. A local teacher even cried during my talk and she would like me to speak at her high school of 2,000 students. And the manager has invited me back to have another talk for the coming fall season, and this time, they'll have me hold my signing on a weekday night, something they don't usually do, so I'm very honored and excited.

"The largest newspaper in my area, Poughkeepsie Journal, published an article about my signing before the event; Pulse, the Arts & Entertainment Beat, published an interview with me. All in all, it was a fulfilling experience I'll never forget!"

Shirley is the author of DARING QUESTS OF MYSTICS (Virtualbookworm.com 2003), written and published at the age of 20. Her 700-page autobiography, THE REVELATION OF A STAR'S ENDLESS SHINE: A Young Woman's Autobiography of a 20-Year Tale of Trials and Tribulations (Lulu Press 2005), was self-published at age 21, as well as DANCE WITH YOUR HEART: Tales and Poems That the Heart Tells (Lulu Press 2004). http://www.shirleycheng.com
